No leads in Athens car bomb attack on Bank of Greece

Mystery still surrounds the car bomb that exploded in Athens on Thursday morning. just 24 hours before German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to visit.

A pair of warning calls before the blast ensured no-one was hurt, as police cordoned off the area as the city awoke, but there was damage to one of Athens’ closest-guarded locations, the Bank of Greece, and surrounding buildings.

The explosion came on the fourth anniversary of the arrest of two people on terrorism charges who were believed to be linked to two car bombs that exploded in Athens in 2009. They are now fugitives, and this latest attack appears similar to the earlier blasts.

Police forensic examination continues, as does reviewing security camera footage. This has already revealed a crash-helmeted person parking the car before speeding off with an accomplice on a motorbike with no plates.

“Police connect the big explosion outside Greece’s central bank with the country’s return to the financial bond markets after a four-year absence. Security forces are on red alert, due to Angela’s Merkel visit to the Greek capital tomorrow”, says euronews’ Stamatis Giannisis.
