Rebecca Smith, who lives in London, won a contest and the prize is a
clone of her beloved dog Winnie.

The duplication procedure, which was performed by a biotech company in Seoul, South Korea, usually runs about 100 thousand dollars.

Smith said she and her boyfriend had joked about having 12-year-old Winnie cloned, but when she saw the ad for the contest, things got serious.

She made and submitted several videos, and in her words “it just snowballed from there." After winning the contest, Winnie’s tissue samples were frozen and transported to South Korea, where the biotech firm implanted her cells into a donor dog’s eggs. The embryo was then transplanted into a surrogate dog.

Mini Winnie was subsequently born via caesarian section but it will be awhile before she will be home.

Smith has met the puppy, but can’t take the little dog home yet due to quarantine laws.

She said, "It is heartbreaking.I am going to write to David Cameron to see if he can make an exception for 'mini Winnie'. It was so hard leaving her behind, she is so sweet."

Skeptics have chimed in on the issue, but Smith isn’t letting the negative comments dampen her excitement.
