The Navy has been saying for years that San Francisco’s Treasure Island is safe.

Now they’ve announced that they plan to test all of the area’s homes for evidence of radiation.

Once a naval station, the land began to be used for civilian housing in 1999.

It wasn’t until 2007 that the Navy publicly acknowledged that radiological contaminants existed on the island, but continues to state “There are currently no known public health hazards,”

While the release of their recent plans indicates a change of heart, the statement didn’t disclose when the testing will begin.

Soon is an unlikely time window, as there are several logistic and protocol issues that need to be worked out before testing can begin.

The Navy’s statement also refers to a, “…recent radiological finding beneath an empty housing unit" but offers no specifics.

Residents say there have been several in the past 7 years.

Critics feel that moving people to the island prior to a complete cleanup was unwise.

While it was an active Naval property, it was used as a ship decontamination facility housing both radioactive vessels and parts.
