‘Pompeii’ is the epic tale of the final days before the ancient Roman city was destroyed by a volcano.
Directed by action movie expert Paul W.S. Anderson, the film stars ‘Game of Thrones’ veteran Kit Harrington as the slave-turned-gladiator Milo. He finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, played by Australian actress Emily Browning.
“I didn’t know anything about the mummified corpses that are still in Pompeii now and I thought that was incredible. You can look through these pictures of these people, the moment that they were mummified in the lava and some people cowering and some people embracing and it’s just incredible that that still exists – that sort of physical memory of this incredible tragedy – the fact that you can still actually go and physically see it is kind of amazing,” said Browning.
In order to make the scenes as realistic as possible, the director had an entire city created in Toronto, Canada, including opulent villas, streets, an amphitheater and a forum.
The movie tries to provide a faithful portrayal of the way the Romans lived at the time.
“It surprised me also how advanced civilisation was in 79 A.D. There’s very little difference – the sewage system – they had it all going on down there. It blew me away how they were partying in Pompeii. That was the real Vegas,” said Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who stars alongside Harrington as a slave forced to fight in gladiator battles.

Also starring Carrie-Anne Moss and Kiefer Sutherland, ‘Pompeii’ erupts into cinemas this month.
