In less than two years after acquiring the mobile phone division of Motorola, Google has now sold them to Lenovo for a cool $2.91 billion. When taking into account Google's $12 Billion acquisition price, Lenovo gets a steal at this price. Lenovo has been struggling to establish a presence in the smart phone market, but with the purchase of Motorola, they have already set some very optimistic goals as they plan to sell 100 million devices a year or so after the acquisition.
There have also been a lot of conversation around the reason Google purchased Motorola in the first place. Although they sold the brand, they held on the the supposed 15,000 patents Motorola had in their closet. Did Google purchase Moto only for the patents to protect themselves against apple? This speculation gets a little more credit when you analysize how Motorola was treated over at Google, they were never integrated into the company, despite many of Google's hardware partners crying foul and favoritism.
So, who wins and who loses? It seems like a win win situation for all. Google was able to acquire the patents they needed, Lenovo gets the means to penetrate the smartphone world in a proper manner, and Motorola lives to fight another day.
