Pasta comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, and now fourth generation Italian company Barilla wants to print shapes of pasta that will be customized to order.

Working with a Dutch company called TNO, the project involves the use of three dimensional printing technology.

Barilla reportedly wants to make pasta in various shapes such as a rose.

Although the project is still not finished, their goal is to be able to print 15 to 20 pieces of pasta in under two minutes.

Customers at restaurants could bring in their pasta design on a USB flash drive and the 3D printer could have it ready within minutes after ordering.

A project leader at TNO gave an example saying: "Suppose it's your 25th wedding anniversary. You go out for dinner and surprise your wife with pasta in the shape of a rose."

In the past couple of years ,3D printing technology has been applied to the food industry with a range of food items being printed, from pasta to chocolate.
