While keeping an eye out for frostbite and uncontrollable shivering, cold-weather dwellers are also being advised to beware of the ‘umbles’.

They’re what happen when the cold begins to affect our brain function, due to dropping body core temperatures.

How do you know if you or someone nearby is under an ‘umble’ attack?

It’s simple – just watch for symptoms that rhyme with it, like stumble, mumble, tumble, and fumble.

Impaired motor abilities and diminishing consciousness could be signs that hypothermia is taking hold.

It’s advised that efforts to increase the body temperature be undertaken immediately.

A warm environment will, naturally, be helpful but there are additional ways to expedite warming.

Physical activity, wearing dry clothing, and ingesting hot and preferably sugary drinks are all recommended.

If there are carb-loaded foods on hand, follow up the beverage with a snack of them.

The combo has been likened to starting a fire with kindling and then stoking it with logs.

When facing frigid temps in general avoiding alcohol is wise as it contributes to heat loss. Caffeine and tobacco aren’t beneficial when battling cold, either.
