UKRAINE: PROTESTERS POST SELFIES ONLINE
This photo caption posted online by Daryna Shevchenko reads "breaking the law". The Ukrainian journalist is denouncing a series of repressive laws recently adopted by parliament, which, amongst other things, ban protesters from wearing masks or helmets.
Many demonstrators have posted “selfies” online over the past few days illustrating how they have been protecting themselves from the cold and the tear gas. The pictures often feature barricades as a backdrop amid the deadly clashes between protesters and police.
And ever since the unrest erupted two months ago when the Ukrainian government refused to sign a European Union association agreement, social networks have been abuzz with photos of citizens showing their support for the revolution and the protests staged in and around Kiev`s Independence Square.
Former boxing champion and opposition leader Vitali Klitschko and his brother Vladimir have also been posting “selfies” taken during demonstrations – like this photo in front of a riot police cordon.
And members of the security forces have also been known to take out their camera and immortalize their involvement in the repression. This video shows the shocking moment police officers took souvenir shots with a protester who had been forced to strip to his socks and stand in the freezing cold temperatures before being taken away in a police bus.
