The FDA announced that they are again safety testing caramel coloring, which is often added to soft drinks and other edibles.

In the many previous trials conducted by the agency, the additive has never been found to pose a health risk, but in light of new information discovered by Consumer Reports it will take another look at them.

The advocacy group said that their researchers found a range of levels of 4-methylimidazole, also known as 4-MEI, which is a potential carcinogen present in several beverages.

Small doses, like those found in sodas, haven’t been proven to cause harm and no federal guidelines exist, but some states do have limits on the amount that products can contain without carrying a warning label.

Consumer Reports says they’ve found amounts higher than those allowed in California being sold in that state.

Among the products specifically called out for over-use is Pepsi.

PepsiCo responded by assuring the public that they’ve lowered levels in the past, and are in compliance with every law that exists in all places their products are sold.

The FDA says they’re reviewing the new data, but didn’t mention what it entails.
