Surveillance Aircrafts to Hover Over Maryland

Two surveillance aerostats, which are much like blimps, will soon be occupying the airspace 10 thousand feet above some of Maryland’s army-owned land.

The ground they’ll be tethered to is about 45 miles northeast of the nation’s capital.

Their radar reach is impressive, extending to Raleigh North Carolina, Boston, and Lake Erie.

All of that detecting power is for identifying and mitigating potential threats to Washington D.C.

The aerostats can sense airborne enemy incursions coming from up to 340 miles away, be they missiles or planes.

Also within the capability of the radar system is monitoring land-based vehicles like trains, cars, and boats.

So far what they don’t have are high-powered surveillance cameras capable of targeting single individuals, as similar models have in the past.

Collecting and analyzing personal information is not part of the plan for the two blimps over Maryland.

Even if it were, experts say that capturing details like license plate numbers is a tough task for cameras mounted that high due to their extreme angles.

However, the army says it has not ruled out the addition of such devices in the future.
