Here are 10 surprising facts about peanut butter according to National Geographic.

A wise man once said - if you haven't tasted peanut butter, you haven't lived life. And that man by the way..ahem..is yours truly.

So without further adieu, here are 10 facts about peanut butter.

Number 10 – Peanut butter comes from the ocean? Not exactly, but the compounds that make it spreadable called carrageenans are taken from seaweed.

Number 9 – Even nature loves it. The Western Spadefoot toad smells like peanut butter…well its secretions do.

Number 8 - Residents of the East Coast were found to prefer creamy while those on the West Coast have a taste for crunchy.

Number 7 – Grand Saline in East Texas holds the world record for the largest peanut butter sandwich. It weighed 1,342 pounds, the same weight as an adult male polar bear.

Number 6- PB and J sandwiches and lunchboxes are a perfect combination. The average American kid will eat 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before their high school graduation.

Number 5 – Peanut butter is big in the U.S. food business. Each year, Americans go through about $800 million worth.

Number 4 – The FDA allows a certain amount of foreign matter in peanut butter in the form of insects. For every 3.5 ounces, about 30 insect fragments are allowed.

Number 3 – Despite what the name implies, there is no actual butter in peanut butter. It just helps to drive the point home that its easily spreadable.

Number 2 –Astronauts commonly eat peanut butter but without the bread for fear of crumbs getting into their expensive equipment.

Number 1 – Arachibutyrophobia is a peanut butter related phobia. Many sufferers refuse to even eat a small bit of peanut butter in fear of it sticking to the roof of their mouth.
