In an effort to attract attention to how badly his department needs funding, the Marion County, Florida Sheriff posted pictures of his broken down patrol car fleet on Facebook.
In an effort to attract attention to how badly his department needs funding, the Marion County, Florida Sheriff’s office has been posting pictures of their broken down patrol cars on Facebook.
Some of the photos highlight that many of the cruisers’ odometers read in excess of 200 thousand miles.
Others show the vehicles being towed away or just broken down on the side of the road.
Many of the pictures are said to have been taken by deputies who were in the process of responding to calls.
When asked about the posts, a representative with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said, "We thought that it was important for the public to really see the condition of some of our equipment."
Reportedly, 70 percent of the department’s cruisers have over 100 thousand miles on them and are over 6 years old.
To those who pointed out that their cars with similar ages and mileage operated just fine, the sheriff’s office pointed out patrol vehicles are driven 12 consecutive hours a day.
They are asking the county commissioners for new ones and would also like to see police cruisers added to the policy that mandates county vehicles be replaced every 100 thousand miles.
