A rare example of one of Beethoven’s works in progress is up for auction and expected to bring in around 200 thousand dollars.

The item is a page that was torn from one of his notebooks and is said to have been carried around by the composer while he was working on ‘Missa Solemnis’.

Both sides of the paper have ink and pencil notations. It’s been surmised that Beethoven wrote the ink portions while the page was still joined to the book.

The penciled elements were likely added when he was out walking and thinking.

Originally discovered in 1996, the page was subsequently auctioned for just over 100 thousand dollars. It’s expected to bring double that this time around.

Said a representative of RR Auction in New Hampshire, the house handling the sale, “Rarely does an item arise that offers such great insight into the creative process of genius—essentially unmatched in magnificence, this Beethoven manuscript is a true historical treasure.”
