High Chair Accidents Escalating

On average, nearly 95 hundred children are injured every year as a result of high chair accidents.

That number represents a 22 percent increase between the years of 2003 and 2010 for general injuries, and a shocking 90 percent for head wounds.

Experts don’t know for sure why there are so many more mishaps, but they do have some theories.

One is that children aren’t being secured in the chairs properly, which means ensuring that all of the straps are sufficiently fastened and tightened.

Too often, the only restraint means used in the tray.

It’s been reported that most accidents occur because the child was trying to stand or climb around in the chair.

Another way the risk of a dangerous fall increases is by putting the high chair too close to the table.

Although it seems like a nice, inclusive gesture to pull the chair next to everybody else’s, being near anything that the little one can use to repel against increases the chances that the chair will tip over.

User error isn’t, of course, the only issue. Parents are advised to keep on top of recall lists, as millions of chairs have been recalled.
