Challenges Amazon Will Have to Overcome for Drone Delivery

Amazon has a few hurdles to clear before it’s 30-minute-delivery drone becomes a shipping option.

Next-day delivery may be cool, but, let’s face it, it’s not nearly as awesome as having your Amazon order show up on your doorstep within 30 minutes using drones.

According to a report for ReadWrite, there are three major issues that could stand in the way of making Amazon’s proposed delivery system available to consumers.

The most critical one being the Federal Aviation Administration’s current prohibition on commercial drones operating in US airspace. Plans for how to begin addressing and integrating their use aren’t slated to be in place until 2015.

Another potential issue is the large number of criminals and garden-variety jerks lurking around cyberspace. Commandeering the crafts will likely present as a challenge they can’t pass up.

In fact, only moments after the drone plans were revealed on 60 minutes, Twitter was abuzz with talk of hijacks and package thefts.

Safety is also a matter for concern, particularly in densely built and populated areas. The drone being tested by Amazon flies low enough at times to be in the average human height range.

The drones have numerous propellers, so one coming into contact with human tissue could be messy and painful – even disastrous.
