Drone Attempts to Drop Tobacco Inside Prison Gates

Four people are facing 20-year sentences after attempting to deliver a package full of tobacco via drone to a Georgia prison.
Four people could potentially face up to 20 years of jail time after attempting to deliver a package full of tobacco via drone to a Georgia prison.
A corrections officer at the facility noticed that a remote-operated helicopter had flown over the prison gates and shortly after officials began to comb the area for its origins.
About an hour into their search they discovered a black Dodge parked in the nearby town of Morgan. The plates on the car indicated that the perpetrators had traveled approximately 200 miles to get there.
A search of the vehicle yielded the six-rotor drone, the transmitter, and binoculars.
They also found around two pounds of tobacco that had been rolled up and seemingly prepped for delivery.
Authorities believe that the four individuals who owned the equipment were in the process of reaching the tobacco’s recipient to coordinate a drop-off. (2,4,2)
Each of them reportedly had several cellphones with various contacts.
The area sheriff said that he’s seen quite a few smuggling attempts over the years, but the use of a drone was definitely a first.
