France sides with Israel over taking tough stance towards Iran
President François Hollande has laid a wreath at Israel’s national Holocaust memorial.
The ceremony was part of his three-day visit to the country.
Top of his agenda while he is there is the progress being made in trying to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In an act of solidarity with his Israeli hosts, the French leader had earlier promised to oppose any easing of sanctions against Iran until he is convinced Tehran has given up seeking atomic weapons technology.
At a press conference Hollande referred to the reconvening of talks in Geneva this week as world powers seek a nuclear deal with Iran. He said progress had been made but not enough and he said France would not give way on nuclear proliferation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes a potential deal lifting some sanctions on Iran while leaving the Islamic Republic with uranium-enrichment capabilities.
Also on Hollande’s agenda is the current state of Middle East peace talks. Later on Monday he is due to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
