Thanksgiving Day Retail Workers Get Big Perks

Many retailers are planning to get the Black Friday ball rolling early by opening their doors for business on Thanksgiving Day.

As a means of enticing employees to clock in that day - and deflect the public outrage that’s been building over the decisions – stores are offering some pretty amazing perks.

One incentive is a bump in pay. Macy’s, Walmart, Kmart, and Target all announced they will be providing some form of additional financial compensation.

Offers on the table range from overtime to an extra day’s pay.

Walmart said they will also give employees who work a Thanksgiving shift a 25 percent store discount and serve them a hot turkey dinner.

At Toys R Us, holiday workers will get bigger paychecks and food as well, plus they’ll be allowed to show up in jeans and sneakers.

The incentives have been working well for both parties, with many employees volunteering to fill the shifts.

While many retailers have been accused of opening out of greed, the decision has been defended as being a necessity.

Black Friday is particularly important to retailers this year as the Christmas shopping season is almost a week shorter than it was last year.
