Roma girl expulsion sparks online outrage in France
High school students in Paris leave the classroom to pound the pavements. As we can see from these images circulated via social networks, dozens of schools across France staged demonstrations on Thursday to protest the expulsions of foreign students.
One student union and the « education without frontiers » network have been particularly instrumental in the protest movement, posting an article, on the site Mediapart, describing the way in which Leonarda was treated. The fifteen year old Roma student was arrested by police last week when she was on a school field trip, so she could be expelled back to Kosovo with her family.
The story has sparked heated debate online. Countless web users, like socialist politician Laurianne Deniaud have taken to Twitter to voice their outrage, saying the expulsion goes against the values of the French republic and those advocated by the ruling left. Disgusted French web users have been sharing this petition demanding the school girl be allowed to return to France – it has been signed by some 13 500 people.
Others however like the general delegate for the UMP party Valérie Debord say the deportation was conducted in compliance with the law and people should not let emotions take precedence over the law. Web users say if the majority is not happy with the law then it should be changed.
