Based on an analysis of 13 indicators, researchers have determined that the best place in the world to be old is Sweden.

The Global AgeWatch Index, which was backed by the UN, assessed the situations in 91 countries.

They were judged on factors including income and employment, healthcare, and education.

Sweden came out victorious based largely on its commitment to helping its elderly inhabitants, particularly in the way of its pension system.

Norway and Germany were the next in the top ranking spots.

Wealthy places like the US, Western Europe, Australia, Japan, and Chile also made it into the top 20.

There were some surprises in the rankings. Countries like Sri Lanka and Bolivia claimed higher spots on the list than some significantly richer nations.

Bolivia was praised for offering free healthcare to its elderly despite being one of the poorer countries in the study.

Not performing so well were some eastern European countries including Moldova and Montenegro.

The bottom spots in the survey were assigned to Afghanistan – which was ranked the worst - Tanzania and Pakistan.
