According to new research from the University of California, San Francisco subjects who start a lifestyle program that includes a healthy diet, exercise and stress reducing techniques can slow down aging.

Researchers looked at the effect of these changes on telomeres, which are on the end of chromosomes that carry DNA.

The subjects in the study were men with prostate cancer, and the results show that after making the lifestyle changes, their telomeres were significantly longer.

Doctor Dean Ornish, a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco who worked on the study said: “Taken as a whole, this is really the first study showing that any intervention may reduce cellular aging.”

The volunteer subjects for the study were given a diet that consisted of fruit, vegetables, unrefined grains and whole foods, while keeping their fat consumption down to ten percent of their calorie intake.

The volunteers ate healthy food along with walking for a minimum of 30 minutes a day, doing yoga stretches and breathing exercises and attending one hour stress reduction group sessions once a week.

Blood test results show how much the subject’s telomeres lengthened after adhering to the regimen for a few months.
