A Rhode Island man was recently mauled by a giant bear while he was visiting Alaska.

John Matson was taking part in a guided hunting tour in a town outside of McGrath which is approximately 220 miles away from Anchorage. The terrifying incident occurred after Matson shot the grizzly bear.

The animal was able to run away, however Matson went looking for it. While scouring through high brush, the bear snuck up on Matson and attacked him.

According to troopers, the large creature was shot several more times before it took off for good. Thankfully Matson’s injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Troopers took the report at a little before 9:30 P.M. in regards to the mauling. Due to nasty weather, rescue authorities were unable to fly to Matson. The Alaska Air National Guard’s Rescue Coordination Center was called in to assist and they eventually reached the victim.

An assistant hunting guide and a fellow hunter were able to temporarily stop Matson’s bleeding until professional help arrived.
