Chicken Rental Offered to Hesitant Home Farmers

Plagued with indecision about whether or not to jump on the at-home farming bandwagon?

A Pennsylvania couple may be able to help. They’ve started a chicken rental business to help people decide if keeping a backyard coop is for them.

For 350 dollars, Rent the Chicken will drop off two hens, a coop on wheels, and enough feed for the spring to fall season.

In November, about the time when hens start laying eggs at a much slower pace, Rent the Chicken will come and pick everything up.

At that time you can opt to buy them, re-up for next summer, or say, “Thanks, but it’s just not for me” and go your separate ways.

The typical rental period runs from May to November, but those deciding to join late in the season can still take advantage of the service at a discounted rate.

Obviously, it’s good for people who want to know what they’re getting into before they commit to it.

It’s also good for the chickens, as many of those sold to home farmers end up dead before they even have a chance to lay their first egg.
