Heat Wave Causes Chinese Man to End Fake Death Protest

A protester, who was playing a dead man, had to change his strategy when the record-high heat got to him and he cast off the sheet allegedly saying, “It's too hot. I can't bear it anymore."

According to Human Rights Watch, at least 656 Chinese cities employ non-criminal law enforcement personnel called chengguan to work independently from police and monitor compliance with sanitation, traffic, and environmental laws.

Their reputation as “violent government thugs” (1,sidebar,4) led one man to stage his own death in a form of protest.

Police in the Hubei province have detained a drink vendor identified as Mr. Han and two others for public disturbance after Mr. Han pretended to have been beaten to death by the chengguan.

For 2 hours, Mr. Han’s friends demanded compensation for the “dead” body on a stretcher covered by a sheet while hundreds of people and 80 police officers gathered around.

The jig was up when the record-high heat got to Mr. Han and he cast off the sheet allegedly saying, “It's too hot. I can't bear it anymore." Pictures show him drinking a bottle of water.

Mr. Han was protesting recent events where the chengguan claimed the drink vendors’ stands were obstructing traffic and took their products.

Other recent news included police detaining six chengguan for a fruit seller’s death after a fatal blow to the head.
