Daniel Chong, a 25-year-old student in San Diego, was thrown in jail and completely forgotten for 5 days. As a result, the US government has agreed to pay him over 4 million dollars in compensation.

Chong was smoking marijuana at a friend’s house when DEA agents raided the place and took him into custody. (2,3,1)

He was questioned, handcuffed, and put in a 5 foot by 10 foot windowless cell. Authorities said they’d be back for him soon. (1,8&11,1)

But they didn’t come back. Chong was left there without food or water and despite his screams nobody showed up to help him. (1,11,1;1,14,1)

He said that he had to drink his own urine. After a couple of days he had lost enough weight to slither out of his handcuffs. On day three he started to hallucinate.

When he was finally found, he was covered in his own feces and in desperate need of medical attention, being severely dehydrated and on the brink of kidney failure.

He remained in the hospital for 5 days and is said to have needed intensive psychotherapy.
