Some residents in Japan have been concerned about a dog that was seen wandering all alone on Mt. Fuji. When the mountain officially opened to visitors this season, word began spreading about the lost dog.

People began posting about sightings online. As time went on, the dog seemed to get skinnier, to the point where bones could be seen underneath the fur, prompting more concern for its life. People started asking animal welfare groups to intervene.

A cage filled with bait was set up to catch the medium sized mix breed with light brown fur. It was believed the dog got separated from its owner during a climb.

Sightings had been posted on the web since July 1st and finally on July 29th, the pooch was captured and rescued. During that nearly one month span, the male dog lived on over 12,000 foot summit and reportedly survived on scraps of food left behind by hikers.

The animal is now being taken care of by workers at a local health center. It is hoped that with all the publicity surrounding the dog, the owner will come forward to claim him, but if not, staff at the center will look for a new human family for the pooch.
