Study: Average Bra Size Has Gone Up From 34B to 34DD

Over the past three decades, the average American bra size has increased from a 34B to a 34DD. The change is believed to be in part due to a better understanding concerning properly fitting bras.

Most people would probably say the average women’s bra size is a B cup. However, that guestimate is way off according to a new study carried out by the bra retailer, Intimacy.

Over the past three decades, the average American bra size has increased from a 34B to a 34DD. That’s a difference of two entire cup sizes.

While plastic surgery and an increased rate of obesity could be partial contributors to the bigger bras, there is reportedly another likely reason. The change is believed to be due to a better understanding concerning properly fitting bras, and the availability of larger cup sizes.

The brassiere industry exploded after Oprah Winfrey dedicated a show in 2005 to help women find the correct size for both comfort and support. A representative with Intimacy stated “More woman actually know what bra size they are wearing now. It's not necessarily that women's breasts are growing. I mean, diet and exercise play a part in it but women are just more educated and have more options.”

Many lingerie companies offer free bra consultations, making it easier for women to ensure they are wearing the appropriate size.
