Just like everything else, the world of languages is always evolving.

A linguist from the University of Michigan has discovered a language still in its developmental stages, which is considered to be a rare find.

She first heard it in a remote northern Australian village with a population of about 700.

After more than a decade of study, she determined that the language being spoken by the young people of the community was completely unique. The language more than melds other tongues, it has its own set of rules.

Called Light Warlpiri, it uses some words that are clearly derived from the other languages spoken in the area, primarily “strong” Warlpiri, Kriol and English.

Among the linguistic characteristics making it its own is a unique verb tense that doesn’t appear in any of the sources.

The ability to develop and sustain a new language is attributed largely to the remote nature of the area. It’s situated hundreds of miles from the nearest trade and commerce centers and doesn’t even have fully paved roads.
