Recently shark scientists in the Florida Keys discovered a large, real piece of an actual rocket on the shore.

Measuring about the size of a swimming pool, it washed up into the shallow waters of the remote Dry Tortugas National Park. The rocket portion weighed several hundred pounds. It bore the name of Arianespace, which is a European consortium specializing in the launching of satellites.

It is believed the piece is a protective metal sheathing known as a fairing. The washed up section is thought to be from a mission that took place in late 2012.

An Arianespace spokesperson said “Ordinarily the fairing sinks to the ocean floor, becoming an artificial reef. From time to time, a strong ocean current washes one ashore.” The rocket piece required a tow during high tide to pull it from the water.

The fairing was put on display in the Garden Key, while authorities figure out where and how to get rid of it for good.
