A New York City EMT dispatcher, Joann Hilman-Payne is undoubtedly a hero. She kept a stroke victim conscious and on the phone line for over 8 hours while rescuers hunted for her exact location.

A New York City EMT dispatcher, Joann Hilman-Payne is one employee who deserves the title of hero.

She recently took a call from an elderly woman named Mary Thomas, who was suffering from a stroke. Because Thomas was unable to speak clearly, rescue personnel were not successful at pinpointing her exact location.

Hilman-Payne took the call at 1 P.M. and she still had Thomas on the line when rescuers reached her at 8:30 pm. She kept the victim conscious for over 8 hours.

Workers were initially dispatched to an address on East 71st Street, which was obtained via cell phone towers, however that location turned out to be incorrect. Not willing to give up, Hilman-Payne patiently kept the elderly victim on the phone.

The ordeal turned into a lengthy search for the woman’s location. Eventually law enforcement got involved, but again the efforts were unsuccessful as rescuers arrived at several other Manhattan addresses.

Finally, at 8:30 P.M., a precise address on East 72nd Street was detected by Verizon security.
