A new wildlife park being planned by the American Prairie Reserve, or APR, is on course to be the largest wildlife park in the contiguous United States.
A new wildlife park being planned by the American Prairie Reserve, or APR, is on course to be the largest wildlife park in the contiguous United States.
The Great Plains that stretch from Texas to Montana were transformed from wild grasslands to one of the most fertile farmlands on the planet in less than 100 years.
The APR is planning to acquire 500 thousand acres of private land combined with 3 million acres of public land to create an area of protected grasslands that will serve as a wildlife preserve from Montana to Canada, an area about the size of Connecticut.
Nearly a quarter of the 500 million dollar goal has already been donated, and a third of the land has been secured.
Federal and state agencies are joining the effort by saving land from being designated for farming and making sure that it is used for the preservation of biodiversity.
The land is already slowly being returned to its natural state, with 26 miles of fences being taken down.
APR organizers hope that future generations will reward their efforts by being able to appreciate the natural beauty of the Great Plains.
