For three years after marrying into a wealthy family, Sophia has been nothing more than a “mute, useless wife” in the eyes of her husband, Theodore. Their marriage was arranged by his father on his deathbed, and Theodore has taken out all his resentment on her ever since.
One night, during a drinking party, Theodore gives in to his friends’ taunts and abandons a drunken Sophia on the street.
