00:08Dad, I have been practicing for over a month now.
00:18I can't wait to see Raghav's face when he sees how much I have improved at the game.
00:25Yes, Rahul, but don't lose focus during the game.
00:31Come on now, your friends will be at the basketball court soon.
00:38Oh dear, look there, Rahul.
00:42We will be dry and safe under that big tree. Hurry up.
00:49Oh no, what will become of our game now?
00:53Why did it have to rain so suddenly?
00:58Mother said the rains wouldn't be here until July.
01:05Your mother was talking about the climate, son.
01:09For us in Delhi, the rainy season usually begins in early July.
01:17Yes, and now the climate has changed completely.
01:20No, son, the condition or the state of atmosphere of a place over a short period of time is called the weather.
01:32The weather can change many times in a very short while.
01:37Remember how it was sunny in the morning today and look around now.
01:43That is how the weather has changed today.
01:48Weather affects our daily activities.
01:51For example, a sunny day is idle for playing basketball.
01:57Whereas a rainy day is not.
01:59But nowadays, with the help of science and technology, people can make weather forecasts of a particular place.
02:09Come, let us sit on this bench and talk about these changes.
02:14But, dad, isn't climate just another name for weather?
02:22No, Rahul.
02:24Climate is the average weather condition of a place for a longer period of time.
02:31Different places in the world have different climates.
02:34Do you remember visiting your Shobha auntie in Chennai and your grandparents in Shimla in your summer breaks?
02:46Yes.
02:48We always need to pack sweaters when we go to Shimla.
02:53But Chennai is usually hot.
02:56That is because Shimla has a cold climate and Chennai is mostly warm and humid all through the year.
03:09Remember, the climate of a place affects the food habits, clothing, transportation and type of houses people live in too.
03:21Okay, now I understand.
03:27Let me summarize the difference between weather and climate.
03:32Okay.
03:35Weather describes the atmospheric conditions of a place over a short period of time.
03:43Whereas, climate is the average weather condition of a place for a long period of time.
03:49For example, 30 years.
03:53Correct.
03:55Weather changes within a short period of time.
04:00Whereas, climate remains stable for a long period of time.
04:05Yes, right.
04:06Weather affects the day-to-day activities of people.
04:11Whereas, climate of a place affects the food habits, clothing, transportation and houses of the people.
04:21Very good, Rahul.
04:23Do you know that many factors affect climate of a place?
04:28Please tell me, Dad.
04:30Look, Dad.
04:34That's Raghav and Steve.
04:37Hey, guys.
04:39Here.
04:40We are here.
04:41Come on.
04:44Thank God for this tree.
04:46I don't think I could have run all the way home carrying this basketball in the rain.
04:52Hello, Verma, Uncle.
04:57It's nice to meet you here, Uncle.
05:01The two of you seem to be having a very serious conversation.
05:06What was it about, Rahul?
05:10Dad was telling me all about the weather and climate on our planet.
05:15Oh, we have learned about this in our school.
05:23Don't worry, Rahul.
05:25You'll be prepared for that chapter when you learn it in the class.
05:31Yes, I already know quite a bit.
05:36Dad was going to tell me about the factors that affect the climate of a place.
05:41Many factors affect the climate.
05:46For example, humidity in an area can affect the climate of the place.
05:53Humidity?
05:55Sounds like a disease to me.
05:58Haha!
05:59That's funny, Rahul.
06:03Humidity is the amount of moisture or water vapor present in the air around us.
06:09In places close to the sea, the humidity is more.
06:15Humidity of a place increases in the rainy season, as the air carries more moisture in it then.
06:23That is why we sweat a lot in the rainy season.
06:28Humidity also affects the climate of a place as it causes rainfall.
06:33In very cold places, humidity causes snowfall instead of rainfall.
06:41Very good, Raghavan, Steve.
06:43You boys are right.
06:45Other than this, distance from the equator also affects the climate in different parts of the world.
06:52The regions near the equator are hotter than the regions away from the equator.
06:59Can anyone tell why?
07:03Because the rays of the sun fall vertically on the equator and the regions around it.
07:11Exactly!
07:12These direct rays are spread over a small area and hence are stronger.
07:21The rays become more and more slanting as they move towards the poles because of the spherical shape of the earth.
07:29The slanting rays spread over a larger area and are therefore weaker.
07:38Yes, correct!
07:40Thus, places near the equator are warmer than the places away from the equator.
07:47For example, Delhi is warmer than London.
07:51Yes, much like latitudes, altitude of a place can also change the climate of an area.
08:03You look confused, Rahul.
08:06Let me explain.
08:08Altitude means the height of a place above the sea level.
08:13The higher a place is above the sea, the colder it is.
08:18This is because the atmosphere at higher places is thinner and absorbs less heat.
08:29That is why most of the mountain peaks are covered with snow in winter and hill stations are cold even in summer.
08:40Exactly!
08:43And the closer a place is to the sea level, the denser or thicker the air closer to the earth's surface is and more heat is absorbed.
08:55Thus, places at lower altitudes are warmer.
08:59For example, Jalandhar and Shimla are located on the same latitude, but the temperature of Shimla is always lower than Jalandhar.
09:11This is because Shimla is located at high altitude, but Jalandhar is at a low altitude.
09:21Also, the distance of a place from the sea is another reason for climate change.
09:28Places near the sea have moderate climate.
09:32That is, neither too hot nor too cold.
09:37Whereas places far away from the sea have extreme climate.
09:42That is, very cold in winter and very hot in summer.
09:49This is because climate of coastal areas is affected by land and sea breezes.
09:58Children, let me explain you land and sea breezes.
10:03Land gets heated faster and loses heat faster than water.
10:12During the daytime, land gets heated more quickly than water.
10:18It makes the air above the land surface hot.
10:22This hot air rises up.
10:26The cool air above the sea blows towards the land to occupy the space created.
10:35This is known as onshore wind or sea breeze.
10:40It brings down the temperature of the places close to the sea.
10:46Now, the opposite happens during nighttime.
10:51The land cools quicker than water.
10:56The warm air above the sea rises.
10:59And the cooler air from the land blows towards the sea.
11:04This is known as offshore wind or land breeze.
11:10And this raises the temperature of the places along the coast.
11:16The cold air is moderate.
11:17Children, so the weather of coastal regions remain moderate due to the land and sea breezes.
11:25Ok.
11:26The last factor is direction of winds.
11:31What is wind?
11:34Horizontal moving air is called wind.
11:39Correct.
11:40Hot winds increase the temperature of a place while cold winds decrease it.
11:47The winds passing over water bodies carry moisture and bring rain to the places they blow over.
11:57India is affected by seasonal winds known as monsoons.
12:03The south-west monsoon winds bring rain from June to September.
12:10And the north-east monsoon winds bring rain during December and January.
12:18Now, I understand it better, Dad.
12:23Keeping in mind all of these factors, our entire world is divided into three heat zones or climatic zones.
12:35The torrid zone, the temperate zone and the frigid zone.
12:44The region between the two tropics, the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, is known as the torrid zone.
12:54The equator passes through the center of this zone.
12:59This zone receives direct sun rays, making it the hottest of all three zones.
13:08Some parts of the torrid zone also receive high amount of rainfall.
13:15Thus, this region is also called the tropical zone.
13:24The regions between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the Northern Hemisphere and between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Hemisphere form the temperate zone.
13:40These are known as the north temperate zone and the south temperate zone respectively.
13:47These regions receive slanting rays of the sun and hence the climate is neither too hot nor too cold.
13:57There are two frigid zones on the Earth.
14:01The frigid zone in the Northern Hemisphere lies between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole.
14:09The frigid zone in the Southern Hemisphere lies between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole.
14:18Frigid zones are very far away from the equator.
14:22They receive extremely slanting rays of the sun that provide very less heat.
14:28Thus, the climate here remains extremely cold throughout the year.
14:34Well done, children!
14:35Wow!
14:36This is so interesting!
14:37Who would have thought the rain and sunlight we enjoy so much could have so many other factors affecting them?
14:52I wonder what climatic zone India is in?
14:57How about we go home and figure out the answer to that question while we help ourselves to some tasty pakoras boys?
15:11That will be the perfect end to this rainy evening, Dad!
15:18I am ready to feed on Mrigen.
15:25Please accept this and understand Why our 귀id of Knowledge backpack let us know.
15:29All right, let's take a picture of it, Mark Th Vader seed 29.
