Transcript
00:00We welcome you to Dallas, Texas.
00:07Tonight, the site of the debut of Cooper Flagg as the Mavericks take on the Spurs in the 25-26 season opener.
00:17Plenty of those jerseys are going to sell as Cooper Flagg walks into the building ready to officially become a pro and introduced moments ago.
00:30The guard in his first season from Duke, welcome to Dallas, number 32, Cooper Flagg!
00:43And forward, made in for the Spurs, still without De'Aaron Fox, coming back from a hamstring injury.
00:51So you have Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagny, Harrison Barnes, and Victor Wembenyama for the Mavericks.
01:00Cooper Flagg, Clay Thompson, P.J. Washington, Anthony Davis, and Derek Lively the second.
01:05And here's the interesting thing.
01:07You know, not only is Cooper Flagg making his debut, Jay, he is going to start at point guard for Jason Kidd.
01:14Really amazing.
01:15He can handle the ball.
01:16He'll be a lead guard, not just a point forward.
01:18But that puts P.J. Washington at the three with Anthony Davis at the four.
01:23So Lively and Wembe to jump it up.
01:27And the Spurs control the tip as we are underway.
01:31Derek Lively the second, matching up with Victor Wembenyama.
01:34And right away, a steal from Flagg.
01:37Davis the lob, and Flagg couldn't put it down.
01:40Davis will.
01:42Getting close to five on five.
01:44And Irie Irving.
01:47Jason Kidd said, if you saw him practicing, you'd think he's ready to go right now.
01:51As Lively looks ready to go on the alley-oop.
01:53And here comes Castle.
01:55Castle bounces it out.
01:58It trickles to Vassell.
01:59His three is good.
02:01Christy checking into the game for Dallas.
02:06He was also acquired along with Anthony Davis in the Luka deal.
02:11Barnes, cut X, cut a three.
02:15Full-fork zone pressure from Dallas.
02:18Might have slowed the advance.
02:19Oh, my.
02:21The Tomahawk.
02:25Davis kicks to the corner.
02:27They move it around.
02:28Tom Marshall, back to Christy.
02:30His three is good.
02:33This is the best he's felt in a long time.
02:36He's starting out the season completely healthy.
02:39Demar floats it in.
02:42Over McLaughlin.
02:43The nation assists, averaging around 10 a game.
02:47It's going to be a lot easier for him to pass with the space you get in the NBA.
02:52He's over seven feet tall.
02:54He looks like he's 6'2".
02:56Wambi, the catch and the finish.
03:04Wambi, three to shoot.
03:06Wambinyama fading and hitting.
03:09How do you stop it?
03:10Rookie of the Year, Stefan Cash, a one-point ball game.
03:13What did you like about that first quarter for you guys?
03:15I liked our pace.
03:16We're trying to make them play more in the half court.
03:19Playing transition with us.
03:20Trying to get some easy buckets.
03:21But everybody seemed connected.
03:23We're trying to settle down, so hopefully we have a good second quarter.
03:26Speaking of that connection, Victor with 11, you with 7.
03:29What has that connection been like now?
03:31Year two for him.
03:32Year two for you, year three for him.
03:34It's been great.
03:34I mean, we've been building chemistry every day.
03:36I mean, we both want the same things.
03:38We both want to win, so we're just doing everything we can to do that.
03:40Stefan, good luck.
03:41Guys, back to you.
03:42No De'Aaron Fox right now, so a little bit more of a primary ball handler.
03:46As he comes up with a steal.
03:48Leans in.
03:49Finishes.
03:50Buzzed the foul.
03:52What a tough bucket in transition.
03:55Flag another rebound.
03:56His fourth.
04:01Washington.
04:02Connex on a three.
04:04Nembhard back ironed it off.
04:09Champagny the flick ahead.
04:11Castle pumps it down.
04:15Can't hit the leaner.
04:17So, yes, Powell thrust into action.
04:19Wembenyama!
04:20Oh, my!
04:23The cosmic grace.
04:25Davis couldn't finish it.
04:27Back in off the bench in this second.
04:30Here's Wembenyama after that ridiculous reverse.
04:32Yeah, why not?
04:33Just bank it in softly.
04:35Barnes, five to shoot.
04:37Too much on it.
04:40Here comes Russell.
04:41Giving it up.
04:42Christie knocking it down.
04:46He also is excited about the progress Kyrie Irving is making.
04:52Coming off that torn ACL as Barnes lays it in.
04:55First six seasons.
04:56Again, the longest drought in Spurs history for a player to not make the postseason.
05:01But he's really ingratiated himself to the community as you see that three ball there by B.J. Washington.
05:07The number two overall pick gets it into Wembenyama.
05:10Guarded by Washington.
05:11Wembenyama, the fake, the reverse, and the foul.
05:16A figment of our basketball imaginations.
05:20Wembenyama, working Davis, spinning, taking, hitting, plus the foul.
05:30And a block shot.
05:32He's only taken one free.
05:34Lassell, the steal.
05:36And the finish, plus the foul.
05:39The Spurs humming now.
05:43Flagg loses the handle.
05:45Trying to get it back.
05:46Johnson able to corral.
05:48Harper alone, able to lay it in.
05:53Flagg draws two, finds Powell.
05:55Thompson, they need it.
05:57Another try is good.
06:02Spurs the seven-point lead.
06:05Castle, trying to accelerate around.
06:08Flagg, stopped.
06:09Harper hangs and hits.
06:12Wembenyama has three fouls himself.
06:15Davis does start the second half on the floor.
06:19Flagg is finally...
06:21Flagg with some haste.
06:22Surges and gets denied by Wembenyama.
06:27Lively then nearly took it away from Wembenyama.
06:30Instead, it's Fassell going up high to throw that down from Castle.
06:36Lively denied emphatically by Wembenyama.
06:41It's like playing against your dad in the driveway when you're eight years old.
06:44What do you do?
06:46Wembenyama, three.
06:47Yupik!
06:49Plus the foul.
06:51Nice job by Washington to hang in there.
06:57Washington gets booked.
06:59Blazer did in.
07:00Plus the foul.
07:03Wembenyama fakes the three.
07:07Dazzle, spins, fades.
07:09Why not?
07:11He's got everything.
07:13Gave that little jab stuff to the baseline.
07:15Then he just exploded middle.
07:16And now comes up with another steal.
07:18Castle twists into two.
07:22Plus the foul.
07:2411-0 Spurs run.
07:28Russell flings it out.
07:30Davis brings in a three.
07:34Cornette goes to the offensive glass every single time.
07:37There's Castle leaving for Cornette.
07:40Denied by Davis.
07:4421 points Spurs lead.
07:46Wembenyama on the bench has 31 and 10.
07:49Three blocks as well.
07:50Davis again.
07:52And a timeout taken by Mitch Johnson.
07:55Getting in the lane without Wembenyama in the game.
07:59He just had a matchup he could overpower.
08:01Johnson connects on the corner three.
08:06Castle now with six assists to go with his six boards and 18 points.
08:10Flag fading.
08:12Ben's hitting.
08:14Back-to-back buckets for the number one overall pick, Cooper Flack.
08:17Slow down a little bit.
08:18Let's just run good offense.
08:20Arpher.
08:25Nasty footwork.
08:26And now here in San Antonio, part of this Spurs coaching staff with Mitch Johnson.
08:33Flag.
08:33Oh, under and in.
08:35Big time bucket.
08:37Arpher waiting.
08:39Cornette's in the dunker spot for an offensive rebound.
08:42Arpher gets the nine.
08:44Washington the block.
08:46Christie.
08:48No.
08:48And that will do it for the third.
08:52About San Antonio taking the lead going into the half at that particular time.
08:55And it's interesting because the stuff he told me at halftime, guys, is still stuff that's plaguing Dallas right now.
09:01He said that besides the foul trouble.
09:03And San Antonio's just dominated the paint.
09:0548-22 advantage.
09:08Arpher hops in and curls it home.
09:10The number two pick able to score a round.
09:13Wembe Niyama sat for the back half of that third quarter after his dazzling start to it.
09:19Picked up his fourth foul.
09:21That was on the bench.
09:22Here's Wembe.
09:22Wow.
09:24Just perpetual.
09:26Can't hit.
09:27Wembe Niyama.
09:28His 13th rebound.
09:29Wembe Niyama.
09:30Wembe Niyama.
09:32Wembe Niyama.
09:33Shames takes and slams.
09:37It's absurd.
09:40Wembe gets the castle.
09:42Castle over to the cell.
09:44Lobin' and open.
09:45Wembe Niyama completes the execution of a beautiful set.
09:53Barnes twisting.
09:54On the foul, it's Castle.
09:58Another O-board.
10:04Castle explodes to the rim.
10:07He saw that he had Ryan Nembhardt on him.
10:10Fifth career 40-point game.
10:13Wembe spinning, elevating.
10:17You bet.
10:19A 40-point opener.
10:21It's been a fairly successful franchise, too.
10:25No kidding.
10:30Carter Bryant, who is the 14th pick of this draft, as Harper buries the three.
10:36He's a super athletic guard.
10:45Samson was 7-4, but that was back when they stuffed big guys down in the post.
10:49And if he, you know, took a, this was before in college, he had a three-point shot.
10:56As Dad will do it.
10:59A forever season opener from Wembe.
11:03As the Spurs stomped the Mavs.
11:07125-92 the final.
11:10You mentioned your summer, and you did so many things.
11:13Your coach talked about how intentional those things are to help you with basketball and life.
11:18Whether it was working out with Hakeem, going to NASA, working out with the Shaolin Monks.
11:22What was the inspiration for that summer?
11:25So going to NASA, I don't think it helped me for anything basketball-wise.
11:27But it was a dream, so I liked it.
11:30But, you know, it all helped me.
11:33I think the main thing, my summer revolved around my physical development and my trip to China.
11:37That's what it was about.
11:38And Hakeem, you know, in terms of scoring, it doesn't really get much better.
11:43So it can only be beneficial.
11:46Your teammate is the reigning rookie of the year, Stephon Castle.
11:4922-7-6 tonight.
11:51What can you say about his development and chemistry with you?
11:53Oh.
11:54We talked about purposeful before, you know, like, he's just incredible.
11:59His ability to get downhill, this and when we get Fox back as well, it's, you know, he can make plays that.
12:06I don't see anybody else do that.
12:07You know, those dunks, it's crazy powerful.
12:10Victor, congratulations and thank you.
12:12Guys, back to you.
