00:00It's morning on the Magdalena, where Colombian families are enjoying the river, unaware that
00:22just a few miles downstream, dozens of wild hippos potentially high on coca leaf roam
00:28free. The deadly legacy of Pablo Escobar. Now that we've located at least one hippo with
00:34our thermal drone, we're returning to the island to castrate it. It's a difficult and
00:38dangerous task. And while preventing one hippo from reproducing won't solve the entire problem,
00:45it will provide a blueprint for my Colombian counterparts to follow moving forward.
00:50We have to go buy food to look for them in the swamps and in the trails. I think it's
00:55positive that we're going to find them. I think so. So that's the plan for today.
01:01All right, so we've just come off of the water and onto the island and already there's signs
01:05of hippo scat. So we're following this very clear game trail to try and get to the area
01:10that we saw from the drone last night. But the problem is there is literally nothing more
01:15dangerous on earth than walking through dense vegetation knowing that there's hippos around.
01:21This is how people get hurt. This is how people get killed. This is how hippos ambush you when
01:25you get between them and the water.
01:27We have to go really carefully, go really quietly. I'm a little bit on edge so we're just going
01:33to follow this track and see what we find. Guys, if a hippo does come out of the jungle
01:41at us, just go straight up a tree. You'll never outrun it in a straight line. If they see
01:46you, they're going to be absolutely furious, but they cannot climb. So just get up a tree.
01:50John can drop that audio kit, get up a tree.
01:57Hippos are the most dangerous land animal on earth. And while you may not suspect it based
02:25on their size, they're able to charge as fast as a horse.
02:30You can see the vegetation is changing here. It's opening up. But at the same time, where
02:35more light is coming through, these vines are getting thicker. So there could literally be
02:39a hippo six feet away through that and you wouldn't know until it was too late. If we were in Africa,
02:45I would say never, ever, under any circumstances, should you walk through a situation like this
02:50or you will die. This is really sketchy.
02:54It's crazy.
03:01They're here, they're here, they're here. Hippos are here. Ippos are here. Come, come.
03:08John, watch your feet. Everybody watch your feet. He's saying try not to crunch the leaves.
03:15John, watch your feet. Everybody, watch your feet. He's saying, try not to crunch the leaves.
03:24Males stake out their territories in water, and a pod can include over a hundred hippos.
03:30But they feed on land, often alone.
03:34Meanwhile, their mostly vegetarian diet makes them extremely gaseous.
03:38They also secrete an oily fluid that protects them from the sun.
03:42And the combination makes them smell like rotten eggs.
03:46Can you smell that? You smell that smell?
03:50Yeah.
03:50That's hippo. We're that close. We're so close you can actually smell them.
04:01Can I see them?
04:03No, whiffs, you gotta help me closer.
04:07Oh, s***. They're right there.
04:10The hippo's right there.
04:12This is so dangerous. This is crazy.
04:14The hippo's out of the water. It's literally right there on the left.
04:17My adrenaline is f***ing cranking.
04:20Right there is the most dangerous land animal in the entire world.
04:23The hippopotamus is standing right there.
04:26That animal's responsible for more deaths than any other animal in the African bush.
04:30And here we are on an island in the middle of the Magdalena Basin in Colombia.
04:34That hippo is locked onto us. It knows we're here.
04:38And what makes it so incredibly dangerous is that it's in water so shallow that it cannot submerge.
04:44When they can submerge, they feel confident.
04:46But when it's standing in a foot deep water, if that animal chooses to, it has no option.
04:51But to f***ing turn and get us so we have to be careful and if it comes this way, get into the jungle.
04:58What?
04:58Just turn.
05:00f***ing.
05:00You good?
05:20You heard him there.
05:24She started charging.
05:26Yeah.
05:27But we ran away from the water.
05:29So we were okay.
05:30Holy f***, Alejandro.
05:32It was quite a thing.
05:33That was crazy.
05:34Yeah.
05:34It was charging us.
05:35It was coming right at us.
05:36It was coming right at us.
05:37And this is what you do to track them here?
05:39Yeah.
05:39In the island, this is the way to track them because there's so thick bushes.
05:43You can do nothing in the air.
05:45There's the river over there.
05:47There's a swamp over here.
05:48This is nothing that you've seen before.
05:50This is impossible.
05:51Literally impossible.
05:52Literally.
05:53This might be the most dangerous thing I've done in a long time.
05:56This is crazy.
05:57It's muy, muy loco.
05:58Do you think we better head out?
06:00We must go.
06:01We must get off this island.
06:02This is...
06:03Dane.
06:04Did you hear that?
06:05Yeah.
06:07There's something moving right behind us.
06:09Hippo right there?
06:10Yeah.
06:10Yeah, we need to go.
06:11Come on.
06:11This is not worth it.
06:12Let's go.
06:13Get off the game trail.
06:14Come this way.
06:14Over here.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Get off the game trail.
06:17Someone's going to die here.
06:18I came here to help try and solve the hippo problem.
06:21And I see why it's a problem now.
06:24It's literally impossible.
06:25So this isn't going to work.
06:26To me, this is a lost cause working on this island.
06:28So what I need to do is try and figure out where else can I catch a hippo.
06:33Look, look, look, look, look.
06:34In this contaminated, filthy, stagnant pool, an alligator just popped his head up under those
06:42bushes right there.
06:45Our hunt for a toxic meth gator has led us to an abandoned pool deep in the Florida woods
06:52in a county struggling with drug trafficking.
06:59Yeah, look at that.
07:00The ammonia is super high in here, which means it could easily be an anoxic environment where
07:05there's not enough oxygen for things to live.
07:07And even more so than that, he's clearly stuck.
07:10Because look at how this acts as a deadfall trap.
07:13Meaning once the gator's in here, he's stuck.
07:15He cannot get back out of here.
07:17If something isn't done, he's going to die.
07:20So I'm going to get a hold of Chris and Ron and we'll make a plan to catch this guy.
07:24Because it's freaking disgusting.
07:27Smell my, smell, smell bad the smells.
07:29That's just the water.
07:30It smells like sewage.
07:31It smells like sewage.
07:32Yeah, it's absolutely disgusting.
07:34The clock is ticking and we cannot see the gator, making it difficult to remove it from the sewage.
07:41But there might be a way to get the sewage off the gator.
07:45Keep coming.
07:48There you go.
07:49I don't know that I'm going to get around this tree over here.
07:51There you go.
07:52Good enough.
07:53Big operation here.
07:56It's going to be worth it.
07:57You got to get pumped.
07:58So we managed to get our hands on three different trash pumps.
08:10And so what we're doing right now is just setting them up to drain water out of this pond.
08:14And I'm hoping within an hour or two, we'll be able to have this pond empty and get our hands on this gator.
08:19There we go.
08:24There it goes.
08:28The risk for the gator is increasing with every passing minute.
08:36But if we can pump the sloth out, we'll have this guy warming up in the sun.
08:41He beat my .
08:42So we can run some tests and see if he's a Florida meth gator.
08:48All three pumps are in.
08:49They're cranking water out at a ridiculous volume.
08:52And the level is dropping.
08:54But as you can see, the skies are getting dark.
08:56The storm is moving in.
08:57So we are up against the clock to get this thing grained before it's refilled and we lose this gator forever.
09:02And just when I think we found the solution.
09:13Yeah.
09:14Well, she's dead.
09:16Our pumps can't even handle the toxic ooze.
09:20As you can see, it didn't exactly go according to plan because there's still a ton of muck in there.
09:26How deep would you guess that is, Chris?
09:28It's a couple feet, so.
09:30I think we got to go get them.
09:31Yeah.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Run.
09:33You're going to be our eyes up there, yeah?
09:34Absolutely.
09:35The plan is quite simple.
09:36We are going to get into this disgusting, mucky pond at what's left of it.
09:40And we're going to poke around and see if he's in there.
09:43Oh, yuck.
09:45It stinks, too.
09:48Oh, this is definitely deeper than I thought it was.
09:50Yeah, and it's going to get a lot deeper by that end.
09:57Yeah.
09:58Okay.
09:59I just had something come up and down.
10:01I'm not sure what it was.
10:01Oh, God.
10:05This is actually feeling pretty sketchy.
10:07Look at this.
10:08Yeah.
10:08Yep.
10:09Yeah.
10:09Yeah.
10:09Here he is.
10:15Here he is.
10:15Here he is.
10:15He's right in front of me.
10:16Right in front of me.
10:17I don't like that.
10:25Look, look.
10:26Is that him?
10:29Yeah, that's him.
10:30Right in me.
10:30Right next to me.
10:33Whoa.
10:33Right here.
10:35Right here.
10:37Okay, coming.
10:38Coming to you.
10:38There, he's in the corner right now.
10:40Move in, move in, move in.
10:42He's pretty jumpy.
10:47Oh, I got him.
10:49That's him.
10:50I can feel him.
10:51Yeah.
10:51Step this open.
10:53Plus, it's just a log.
10:55Oh, my God.
10:55It might be.
11:05Yep, he was.
11:06I have his face.
11:12You feeling him?
11:13Yep, I got him.
11:14Got the back leg right there.
11:15His head should come up over there.
11:16I'm going to lift the body.
11:17Okay.
11:17There it is.
11:18There it is.
11:18Right there.
11:18So close.
11:23You still got him?
11:23I still have him.
11:24Let me see here.
11:28Nope.
11:29He's moving.
11:31Tight right up.
11:32He's turning.
11:33Turning towards me.
11:34Watch your leg.
11:35Oh.
11:37It's creepy.
11:41Oh, he's behind us.
11:42He did go through me.
11:44That's okay.
11:44There he is.
11:45There he is.
11:45There he is.
11:45There he is.
11:46He's right here.
11:48I got him here.
11:50I've got his tail.
11:52Hang on.
11:53There he goes.
11:57There's a frog there, but he's sitting in this corner.
11:59He's right there.
12:03This feels like his body.
12:04Okay.
12:10Oh, yes.
12:11Yes, it is.
12:11I'm going to grab his tail.
12:13And just jam and start walking him.
12:15Okay, I got his tail.
12:16I got his tail.
12:17He's a pretty big gator, dude.
12:18Come on, buddy.
12:20No snapping now.
12:21Look at that.
12:21Literal garbage.
12:23In here.
12:32Right behind him.
12:33Right behind him.
12:35Yep.
12:36That's his whole head.
12:36That's his face.
12:37That's his head.
12:37That's his head.
12:38Right here.
12:38That's his head.
12:38That's his head.
12:40Careful, Chris.
12:43You got him?
12:44You feeling him?
12:44There you go, Greg.
12:52Got him.
12:52Got him.
12:53Let him down.
12:53There we go.
12:54There we go.
12:55Fantastic.
12:55Okay.
12:57That was his tail.
12:57I thought it was his head.
13:00Good deal.
13:01Go to the shallow side.
13:02That was sketchy.
13:03Good eye, Chris.
13:04Way to catch him, Forrest.
13:05Thanks, Ron.
13:05That's what we needed.
13:07All right.
13:07There we go.
13:09There we go.
13:10Close him up there.
13:14All right.
13:15There we go.
13:17But, I mean, this guy had no chance being stuck in here.
13:20He was never coming out of here.
13:21This is our animal that undeniably is contaminated.
13:24I mean, as are we at this point.
13:25So, I think we should get him to your place.
13:27Yeah, yeah.
13:28Yeah?
13:28Then we can check him and rehab him and everything.
13:29In 2022, I was investigating mysterious animal sightings in the Ozark Mountains.
13:37There, I stumbled upon a secluded cabin.
13:40Doesn't look like anyone's here.
13:43But inside, a man named Sot was making vast quantities of moonshine.
13:51This is a strong one?
13:52This is pure.
13:57Holy f***.
13:58It was just a few hundred yards from this off-grid distillery that my crew and I came
14:07upon a 300-pound American black bear.
14:12In most instances, a black bear will only attack if it's feeling threatened, which is
14:17why you should slowly back away.
14:21But despite our best efforts to back away and give the bear space, it's still mock
14:28charged at us.
14:29Back up, back up, back up.
14:30This way, this way.
14:30Into the ravine, into the ravine, into the ravine.
14:33He's on it.
14:34Forrest, he's coming at me.
14:35Forrest.
14:36Just stay there.
14:37Stay there.
14:37Stay there.
14:38Stay there.
14:38Stay there.
14:41There he goes.
14:42Woo!
14:43He just took off.
14:44Now that my attention has turned to whether bears are drawn to alcohol, I think there's
14:51a good chance that huge American black bear got into that moonshine, especially since Sot
14:57was mixing some of that alcohol with sugar.
14:59This is just regular apple pie.
15:01Apple pie, huh?
15:02Just the cinnamon, I think.
15:03Okay.
15:03This is here with lemonade.
15:04Lemonade.
15:07Yeah.
15:08You're in the middle of nowhere out here.
15:10Have you seen big predators out here?
15:12Sure.
15:13There's bears around here sniffing a lot of either stuff.
15:18So I'm heading back to Missouri to see if I can locate the bear once again and try to confirm
15:23if it's under the influence of alcohol.
15:31Like last time, I'm traveling by car, horse, canoe, and foot to reach the remote area where
15:38we were nearly attacked.
15:44Let's see.
15:44There's kind of a nice little divot.
15:46Something's actually broken this brush here.
15:48See this?
15:49This is recent.
15:50So something's been through here.
15:53We're going to fall on the skin trail right here.
15:59You can see as it curves through this open, wooden area.
16:08Historically, the Ozark Mountains supported large populations of black bears.
16:13Hunting and development nearly wiped them out in the 18 and 1900s.
16:17But the population has exploded ever since, with an estimated 2,500 black bears roaming the
16:24Ozarks today.
16:31Come with me.
16:32Look at that through the trees.
16:37An American black bear.
16:40Could it be the same one?
16:42It has the same cinnamon coloring.
16:46Let's get a little bit closer.
16:47We're so lucky because we're just a little bit downwind of them, so it's not spilling us at all.
17:03I feel very confident this is the same bear we encountered the last time.
17:10Bears will spend their lives returning to a home range.
17:14So spotting the same bear years later is not unusual.
17:19And because that shade of cinnamon is so unique, I have good reason to believe that this is the same bear.
17:25Could he be under the influence?
17:28How amazing is that?
17:37The same bear.
17:41There's something that he's kind of foraging around in that home.
17:44I don't know if it's grubs or what it is.
17:45Can you get a shot?
17:46But he's just found one bear.
17:48He's kind of picking up something that's in the dirt.
17:51It's not on the arm.
17:56When's your thing?
17:57Back up?
17:58Back up, the wind's shifting.
18:00Back up, back up.
18:02Back up.
18:03Get down, get down.
18:05Get down, get down.
18:07Look at that.
18:08Yeah.
18:10I had hoped we could keep our distance to observe if this bear is showing any signs of intoxication.
18:15But now that he's on our scent, we may be forced into a risky confrontation.
18:21Back up, back up, back up, back up.
18:23Let's get out of this ravine.
18:38Let's get out of this ravine.
18:52He's kind of got his pinch.
18:53Come this way.
18:53Ben, come this way.
18:54Come this way.
18:54Quick, quick, quick, quick.
18:55Watch out.
18:56Watch out.
18:57Watch out.
18:58Watch out.
18:59Watch out.
19:00Look at that.
19:01Big.
19:02Beautiful.
19:03North and North.
19:04Watch out.
19:05He's going to keep going up the ravine.
19:08Whoo.
19:09That was crazy.
19:10He was right on top of us.
19:12He wasn't aggressive.
19:13He's beautiful.
19:14He's incredible.
19:15He just...
19:16Sorry, I'm looking over my shoulder in case he shows up again.
19:19But he's beautiful.
19:20He's incredible.
19:21And I do think that was the same bear.
19:24But if you notice, he was far less aggressive than last time.
19:27And he just wanted us to leave him alone.
19:30It's very possible he'd been sampling moonshine the last time we met.
19:34But there's nothing to suggest he's under the influence now.
19:37He's under the influence now.
