00:00Something else here, Josh. I'm getting another hit.
00:08Oh, there. Right there.
00:11Is that...
00:12Is that a coin?
00:14Holy f***. Look at this.
00:16It's a coin, and I'll tell you, it's not from here.
00:19This is what we're looking for.
00:20Let me see.
00:21Here.
00:23Looks like Arabic.
00:25Yes, nice work.
00:27Yes.
00:28Unbelievable. Look at that.
00:30It is the 18th century, and the lifeblood of Great Britain is trans-oceanic trade.
00:38So when the scourge of piracy threatens the empire, King William III releases this.
00:44His proclamation for the apprehension of pirates, effectively declaring war against the skull and crossbones,
00:51with a promise of mercy to any pirate who surrenders, except one.
00:57His name? Captain Henry Avery.
00:59On September 7th, 1695, the so-called King of the Pirates pulled off the greatest heist in maritime history,
01:10capturing the Ganjisawai, the richest treasure ship on the planet.
01:15A score worth hundreds of millions of dollars today.
01:19It ignites the first ever global manhunt.
01:22But somehow, Avery and his loot disappear without a trace.
01:28Now, more than 300 years later, treasure hunters in the United Kingdom believe they're zeroing in on his stolen fortune.
01:36A centuries-old coded letter may point to a pirate cave fit for one-eyed Willie himself.
01:42And a team of salvage divers think they may have uncovered the prize in a graveyard of shipwrecks off the English coast.
01:50Dead men tell no tales, but I do.
01:54And this one is a classic in the making.
01:56It's time to hit the high seas in search of the treasure of the pirate king.
02:01And I've gone 300 miles to the rough coast, where the English Channel meets the Atlantic Ocean, a peninsula long known as the Lizard.
02:11On a windswept bluff, I find my old friend Tyrone Leach, who I met in the Seychelles investigating the buzzard.
02:18Here we are at the ends of the earth, literally. We're at the very edge of the UK here. Why here?
02:23Well, we think Henry Avery, the pirate, buried his treasure right here.
02:27Right here?
02:28Well, around here.
02:29Okay. It's a bold claim. Why do we think that?
02:31Ah, well, we found a letter, and it basically tells you Henry Avery buried his treasure around here.
02:37Simple as that?
02:38Yeah, pretty much.
02:39Can I see it?
02:42Oh, my word. First of all, it says Avery the pirate, so we're on the right track.
02:46Yeah.
02:47And so, do we know where this letter came from originally?
02:50It was passed down through a merchant family here in Cornwall.
02:53And who do we think wrote it?
02:54So, we think Avery originally wrote it, and then over time, it's been transcribed by people
02:59who are actually doing their own searching for the treasure.
03:02As they were looking for it themselves, they added their own notes.
03:05Right, we see little things scribbled in here.
03:07Question marks and stuff like that.
03:08So, the question is, what's in the letter?
03:10Well, we think it's more than a letter. We think it's a treasure map.
03:14So, let's see if we can read it.
03:16On his return from India, either landed or was shipwrecked near the Lizard,
03:21where he buried three chests or boxes full of treasure in the sands of the seashore.
03:27We're off to a good start. We're literally talking about buried treasure here.
03:31And it mentions the Lizard.
03:32And this whole peninsula is named the Lizard.
03:35And it's been called that since the 13th century.
03:37Okay, that's really compelling.
03:39And then after that, is it in French?
03:42Yeah, so it's in French, but we've got a translated version here.
03:45Okay, that's good. I took Spanish in high school.
03:47So, what does the French section say?
03:49So, the French section says, east of Liz.
03:51Okay.
03:52Three gray stones or rocks in a cove.
03:55With a question mark.
03:55Yes, southwest of the three stones.
03:58Okay, and so what are your three stones?
04:00Right where we're standing.
04:01These literal giant gray stones.
04:03And actually, this formation in Cornish is known as Karaglaz,
04:07which actually translates to gray rock.
04:10And it mentions the Lizard.
04:12We've got the Lizard.
04:13We've got a place known as gray rock.
04:15And do we know what he's burying?
04:16Does the letter mention that?
04:18Yeah, there's an inventory in the letter.
04:19Precious stones, rubies, diamonds, and then you've got gold, silver.
04:23Okay.
04:24Any idea what the current value of this would be, Tyrone?
04:27In today's value, over $100 million.
04:30So, enough for all of us.
04:31Yeah.
04:33Then it switches back to English and says,
04:36it is near where the corner of a high promontory juts out into the sea.
04:42High promontory?
04:44Right behind you.
04:45These cliffs right here?
04:46Absolutely, right there.
04:47And that is right above a beach?
04:49Right above a beach or cove.
04:50A cove that has three chests full of treasure in the sand?
04:53That's the hope.
04:54So, has anybody gone down there and searched that beach?
04:57Well, we got permission, so that's the plan.
05:00All right, we got the Lizard, we got the stones,
05:02we got the cliff, we got the cove.
05:04Now we just need the treasure.
05:06Let's go find it.
05:08If the British love anything, well, it's boiling food.
05:12But if they love anything more than that, it's metal detecting.
05:15As the group assembled here surely shows.
05:18Look at this.
05:19It's an army.
05:20What's going on?
05:22Josh, meet the rest of the team.
05:23Wow, you guys are ready for battle here.
05:25And this is a treasure sniffing dog?
05:27Gold sniffing.
05:28Gold sniffing, perfect.
05:29All right, should we get into it?
05:31Let's do it.
05:31Come on, here we go.
05:33Last one to find treasure buys the beers.
05:40We comb the beach, and whether we have two legs or four,
05:44everyone here is determined to find Avery's loot.
05:47I can feel it, Tyrone.
05:52This is it.
05:56You know what that is?
06:01It's a piece of scrap aluminum.
06:03You ever seen that before?
06:04Lots of times, unfortunately.
06:06The good news is, we do find more in the sand.
06:11The bad news is that it's this.
06:13Found a bracket.
06:15What do you think?
06:16Part of a...
06:16Real light, breezy, scrolling.
06:19Yeah, part of a flashlight maybe, right?
06:25Dude.
06:28It's a beer bottle.
06:29But it is a San Miguel, so it's from overseas.
06:36After hours of beachcombing, I've picked up some interesting artifacts and a decent tan.
06:41But I'm hoping for more.
06:43So, Tyrone, we have pretty well scoured this beach, I would say.
06:48A few cool finds, but no pirate treasure.
06:52Nothing yet, Josh.
06:53But there is another place I think we should go search.
06:56Okay, where's that?
06:57Remember in the letter, they mentioned the word cove.
07:00Yes, with a question mark.
07:01Exactly.
07:02What if it wasn't cove?
07:04What if it was cave?
07:06Aha.
07:08So, we have a few sea caves along here, within our target zone, that I feel we need to really search.
07:16Longstanding rumors suggest that treasure may have been buried within a sea cave nearby.
07:20So, we leave Rob and Adam to continue metal-detecting the beach, and prepare for a swim so relaxing it requires a helmet.
07:28Tyrone, this is definitely the last time we're working together.
07:31Unless we find some treasure.
07:33That's a fair point.
07:35The cave where Tyrone wants to look is inaccessible via land.
07:45We'll need to get into the raging water, and hug tightly to the shore to get there.
07:51Against my better judgment, we swim out into the ocean, and start moving toward the cave.
07:56The water is frigid, and even at low tide, we're getting a dangerous lesson in how easy it is to get dragged out to sea.
08:18Tossed around like ra-
08:19I'm alive!
08:22I'm alive!
08:27For now!
08:29On dryish land, Tyrone and I only have an hour to work before the tide comes in.
08:34We hurry to search the temporary beach with handheld metal detectors.
08:48Tyrone,
08:49I see something.
08:51Try to reach.
08:53What is it?
08:59Is it a golf ball?
09:01Yeah, it's a golf ball.
09:02Oh, look, they're everywhere.
09:04This cave is just collecting everything that washes by.
09:08That or somebody's really golf.
09:12We push further back into the cave
09:14to see what else is in here.
09:16Looks like it goes further back.
09:25You want to see if you can get in there?
09:28I'll see, but...
09:29Take a look.
09:30Can I borrow that one?
09:31Yeah.
09:34Hey, can you see anything?
09:35I'm trying to get back,
09:37but if you get back, you've got to be flat.
09:39The tide is starting to rush in.
09:41I'm feeling my throat tighten up a little.
09:43I don't think we have a lot of time.
09:44Those waves are getting louder.
09:45Sounds like thunder.
09:48Okay, let's go.
09:49But Tyrone and his team remain convinced
09:51that the treasure is buried near their beach.
10:01But the discovery of artifacts inside the sea cave
10:03has me considering a line in Avery's letter.
10:06The one which says the treasure was either buried or shipwrecked.
10:11I can't shake the feeling that maybe this treasure isn't so much buried as washing ashore.
10:16And nearby, there are two researchers who feel the exact same way.
10:20The next morning, we greet the Don in the port town of Falmouth.
10:27Rob and Don have a small fleet waiting to bring us to the wreck.
10:31They didn't have GPS to record the exact coordinates of the cannon they found.
10:35So we're going out with both a dive boat and a scanning boat to relocate the target.
10:40Should we get into it?
10:41Yeah, let's go.
10:42Please, lead the way.
10:51We push back from the dock and steam out into open ocean,
10:54Henry Avery's treasure, dead ahead in our sights.
10:58So here we are, Josh.
10:59This is the site.
11:00This is it.
11:01This is it.
11:02We drop anchor and the three of us prepare to dive into water that's barely hitting 45 degrees.
11:11I'm staying warm today.
11:12Dry suit, baby.
11:13Okay, mate.
11:14We're heading down the anchor chain if you want to follow me.
11:19Okay, here we go.
11:21The waters off Cornwall can be vicious, but as you can see, that's not the case right now.
11:27That's because we're working in a tight window called slack tide, with only a half an hour
11:32before the waves and current return.
11:35When they do, they'll either drag us out to sea or bash us against the reef wall.
11:42Visibility's not too bad.
11:43Not bad.
11:44We've got about 15 feet.
11:48Okay, we've made it to the bottom.
11:51Let's cover as much territory as we can.
11:55Josh, look at this.
11:56It's a musket ball.
11:59Unbelievable.
12:00Look at that.
12:03There's three or four here.
12:04This is amazing.
12:07I don't know about this one.
12:09Look at it.
12:10There's something strange.
12:11It's shaved down.
12:13Look at the shape.
12:14Look on the side.
12:15Is that what I think it is?
12:17Is that dice?
12:18Is it a die?
12:19I'm telling you.
12:20That's a die.
12:21You can see the pips.
12:22Look at that.
12:23That is so cool.
12:24I have never seen one of these before.
12:27The musket balls are exciting.
12:29But the die is something unique.
12:32Something else here, Josh.
12:33We're getting another hit.
12:39Oh, there.
12:40Right there.
12:42Is that...
12:43Is that a coin?
12:44Holy .
12:45Look at this.
12:46It's a coin.
12:47And I'll tell you, it's not from here.
12:49This is what we're looking for.
12:50Let me see.
12:51Here.
12:53Looks like Arabic.
12:55Yes.
12:56Nice work.
12:57Yes.
12:58Unbelievable.
12:59Look at that.
13:00It's a coin.
13:01What a fine.
13:02This is special.
13:04We've just unearthed an Arabic coin.
13:07Similar to the one Rob and Don found on their first dive here.
13:11It is a major find, because Avery's big score was the Gangesawai,
13:16which was laden with treasure from Arabia.
13:18We're going to bag it, and let's look at it on the boat.
13:21You got it.
13:22Nice find.
13:23Beauty.
13:24Let's start with that big coin.
13:27I'm not sure how it looks to me.
13:29It's a cross.
13:30We have a cross.
13:31We have a cross with the four shields as well.
13:32Yes.
13:33This is English, yes?
13:34Yep.
13:35And this is who?
13:36This is, uh...
13:37That would be William III.
13:38William III.
13:39There's a three right there.
13:40This puts us in the period, yes?
13:41That puts us right bang smack in the period.
13:42Couldn't be better.
13:43And look at this.
13:44Look at the condition of it.
13:45Oh, nice.
13:46Just sitting down there.
13:47It's solid silver, so it's just clean as when it was minted.
13:48Yep.
13:49Worn, but clean.
13:50Yeah.
13:51It's just amazing.
13:52God, that is unbelievable.
13:53And then this is a die, right?
13:55This, yeah.
13:56Well, I wasn't sure at first because of its shape.
13:57Right.
13:58It looks like a musket ball.
13:59Yeah, I just thought well.
14:00You can see the little pinpricks in it.
14:01It's just amazing because I believe that gambling was actually banned on pirate ships.
14:05Looking at the shape of it, I said it was probably a musket ball, and then they've just flattened it on the sides.
14:08Right.
14:09That would make sense.
14:10It's unbelievable.
14:11And then this coin.
14:14This was, I thought, the showstopper.
14:16This is just amazing.
14:17This is Arabic script here, yes?
14:19It is, isn't it?
14:20Yeah.
14:21This is definitely Mughal.
14:22There are a few ways about it.
14:23This is a Mughal coin.
14:24That is a Mughal coin.
14:25This is as close to a smoking gun.
14:26That is.
14:27As we've seen.
14:28And tied in with those other coins is cast iron proof that that has got to be off of one of the Avery ships.
14:34Certainly this Mughal empire was huge.
14:37They were controlling a lot of trade.
14:39But taken with the musket balls and the cannons and the other coinage from the right period,
14:44it's hard to imagine this isn't part of the Henry Avery story.
14:47So, now what?
14:48Well, now we have to continue magging that area and we need to find the rest of that vessel.
14:52Well, according to history, there's about $100 million worth of it sitting out there.
14:56That would be nice.
14:57It would be really nice.
14:58This may be just the beginning.
15:00Let's just hope so.
15:03Nice work, brother.
15:04Yeah, absolutely fantastic.
15:05Awesome job.
15:06Nice one done.
15:07Absolutely amazing.
15:08Yeah.
15:09Look at that.
15:10Is this the resting place of Henry Avery's last ship?
15:15It just may be.
15:17The necessary elements seem to be here.
15:19Now, it's up to Rob and Don to find the final pieces of the puzzle.
15:24Thank you so much.
15:25Afterρη
15:34Please give me a…
15:36Yep.
