Max Payne is an American action movie starring Mark Wahlberg as a haunted detective on a relentless quest to uncover who murdered his family. Blending noir-style visuals with bullet-time gunfights and dark psychological twists, this film throws you deep into a world of betrayal, underground drugs, and a man who’s got nothing left to lose. Is Max Payne based on a real story? Not exactly—but it’s based on the iconic video game that redefined third-person shooters with slow motion and revenge.

In this movie recap, we dive into every shadowy alley, every betrayal, and every explosive reveal. We’ll explain the cryptic ending, the meaning behind those terrifying hallucinations, and what the drug "Valkyr" really does to people. Plus, you’ll learn exactly how to beat the madness Max is thrown into—from surviving ambushes to navigating a corrupt police system using brutal tactics and pure instinct.

Though Max Payne isn’t a comedy or prison comedy like Big Stan or Let’s Go to Prison, it delivers the same raw underdog fury seen in movies like Never Back Down and even fantasy action tales like The Princess. Max isn’t a soldier, but he fights with the desperation and intensity of Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo—fueled by grief, anger, and one goal: justice.

And while he has no true super powers, the drug-fueled hallucinations and his uncanny ability to survive gunfights feel like a dark twist on reality—almost like he’s living inside a corrupted fake reality where pain is permanent, and enemies come from all sides.

If you love gritty crime thrillers, revenge tales, slow-motion shootouts, and detective stories with a dark edge, Max Payne (2008) is a must-watch. Join us as we break down every clue, every betrayal, and every bullet that brings Max closer to the truth.

00:00This movie begins with the thoughts of a man, Max, who narrates his likes and dislikes, his beliefs and disbeliefs,
00:07while underwater visuals show a man drowning, gasping beneath a river known for taking men when time and chance leave them behind.
00:15Things take a bad turn exactly one week earlier, when life still has structure and the lonely man still has a job.
00:22He works at the closing office department, handling files that come with impossible cases and messy endings.
00:28A new detective is shown around. He's introduced to Max, the man whose whole family was taken in one brutal moment.
00:35The detective gets advised not to try small talk with Max again, as there's no point, and no one really gets close to a man stuck in the past.
00:42Later, he walks the railway's edge without reacting to the three men in hoodies, who are clearly waiting for trouble to clock in.
00:49They pick him as tonight's target, following him into the men's restroom where they corner him for a wristwatch, but he already knows what's coming.
00:56As in fact, he's been watching Doug for a while now.
00:59Next, they accuse him of stealing the accessory.
01:02But Max doesn't argue because he's more interested in what they'll do when he doesn't flinch.
01:06Doug's crew makes a move and our protagonist retaliates by punching the armed one straight in the face,
01:12sending them all scrambling into bathroom stalls while he fires shots after them like he's checking plumbly bullets.
01:18The leader tries to act unbothered, putting on the crazy, but when his victim catches him, he starts mumbling some weird prayer for help like he's summoning backup from a god who's just as shady.
01:28He pulls out a photo of his wife, and suddenly it's clear this isn't random because no one carries that picture by accident.
01:35Doug keeps rambling and giving nothing useful, but his voice just adds to Max's rage until even the silence would have been more helpful.
01:43One of his boys wanders down the train tracks, but he isn't alone because a shadow-like figure begins stalking him,
01:49and when he tries to fight it off, an oncoming train barrels into him.
01:53Max returns to Trevor, interrupting the mood without concern because he wants more information about who might be behind his family's disappearance,
02:02though Trevor wishes he would leave it alone.
02:04Trevor had mentioned Bill before, but the requester still isn't convinced,
02:08and when the informant refuses to say anything new, his ear gets twisted as a warning, making it clear the intruder is not done asking.
02:16The poor guy looks stuck, like someone holding on to more than he's saying,
02:20but before things can go further, Natasha steps in from the side, having watched the scene and choosing to end it before it escalates.
02:27She tries to keep things calm, but Mona shows up soon after and wastes no time putting her sister in her place,
02:33showing no softness, even though they're related.
02:35The reason behind Mona's attitude isn't clear, but Max speaks up, asking her to let Natasha be,
02:41and while the dominant one usually doesn't listen to anyone, this time she backs off and walks away with her suited men.
02:46Trevor's continued pleas to leave are ignored, and the stubborn man follows his hunch deeper into the building,
02:52until he enters a private room with several women around in various states of undress,
02:57touching and kissing each other without concern.
02:59He watches from the doorway without hiding, but then Jack appears beside him, bald, silent, and covered in tattoos along his arm,
03:07and he stares at Max with a fixed look that doesn't break, no words are exchanged, and neither makes a move,
03:14as the moment settles between them like a line that might be crossed at any second.
03:18It's a silent face-off between both men, but it doesn't last long, because Natasha, one of the women from the room,
03:25steps out and cuts through the tension.
03:28She walks up to her target and leans in close, whispering something suggestive in his ear,
03:33something that plants a thought she knows how to stir.
03:36He follows her without saying a word, and Jack watches them go while letting out a faint smirk,
03:41that fades into something more uncertain, like maybe even regret,
03:45because if there's one thing about the woman, it's that she's hard to resist.
03:49Somewhere else in the party, a woman drinks from a small vial,
03:52and not long after, she begins to feel a presence above her,
03:56a shadow that creeps over her, and sends a cold wave down her spine.
04:00The man brings his companion home, and before they're even fully inside,
04:04she starts kissing him, while he remains still, and detached.
04:08She keeps going anyway, removing her dress and lying on the bed with her legs parted,
04:13offering herself without hesitation.
04:14She knows her potential love interest is struggling,
04:18and she thinks this might be what he needs, someone who can play the part,
04:22becoming a placeholder for what he's lost and promised to give him what he's been craving for.
04:27But that offer only disgusts him, so the illusion breaks,
04:31and his frustration rises as he tells her to get out immediately,
04:34his face hard and unforgiving.
04:37Natasha is caught off guard, clearly not expecting rejection,
04:40and when she asks if he means it, he doesn't waver.
04:43The blow is undeniable, and though she tries to cover it by laughing it off,
04:48there's no hiding how deeply her pride's been hit.
04:50She walks out, mocking him with her laughter as if to save face,
04:53but Max knows it's bitterness masked as amusement,
04:57and he watches her leave,
04:58angered by how she tried to cheapen something he's been grieving for.
05:02Out on the street, the lady walks alone, still on the phone with Owen,
05:05speaking casually without realizing Jack is following her from above,
05:09jumping from rooftop to rooftop, and staying just out of sight.
05:13Then her night takes a turn,
05:14as two large, bat-like demons appear and begin to chase her,
05:18using the same trick they're known for by sending their shadows ahead to stir fear before striking.
05:24Natasha runs, but panic overwhelms her, and she trips, landing hard.
05:28Gathering herself is tough, and soon they're on her,
05:32tearing through the silence while she screams in terror.
05:35Morning comes, and the cold office Max works in is buzzing more than usual.
05:40He doesn't know what exactly is going on,
05:42but across the street, a familiar car honks,
05:44and inside, it is Alex, his old partner, bringing with him the hope of answers.
05:50The driver takes him on a ride to a crime scene,
05:52and he doesn't know why he's been brought there,
05:54but the former colleague reaches into his pocket
05:57and pulls out the missing driver's license, which was found at the scene.
06:00The tattoo on Natasha's wrist is all the confirmation the grieving man needs,
06:04and now another person he's had contact with has turned up deceased.
06:08Meanwhile, Jack stays on the rooftops watching them as they make their assumptions.
06:12Alex drives the passenger to another part of town and steps out under the rain,
06:16because he wants answers.
06:18The girl who was with Max the previous night has been mauled,
06:21and although he's clearly affected by Natasha's passing,
06:24he insists he has nothing to answer for.
06:27The investigator is running out of patience,
06:29because he expects his former partner to open up to him about what's bothering him.
06:33But the other man doesn't think Alex has done enough about his missing family,
06:37so there's no trust, just a wall of silence.
06:41This gets to the officer, because he's been doing all he can.
06:44But Max is too clouded by rage to accept anything that doesn't bring him closer to whoever is responsible.
06:51He walks away, ignoring Alex's calls.
06:54Mona hasn't heard the news yet, but she's informed while in the middle of a high-profile meeting,
06:58showing no emotion as she listens, and simply nodding and keeping her chin up.
07:02Meanwhile, Alex is willing to do everything within his power to help his old partner.
07:07So, he flips through Natasha's case file and spots something interesting,
07:11a mark on the wrist of the deceased.
07:14He quickly checks Michelle Payne's case file and finds that exact same mark on her wrist too.
07:19And now, something is beginning to make sense.
07:22The detective tries calling his former colleague to share this theory,
07:26but the call doesn't go through.
07:27Mona, being someone of high profile,
07:29is handed all the details and evidence related to her sister's demise.
07:33Two names stand out.
07:35Owen, the man Natasha called just before her attacker arrived,
07:38and the brooding investigator whose wallet was in her possession.
07:41Eventually, the message reaches its intended recipient,
07:44stating there's a link between the two cases,
07:46and Alex wants to tell him more about it.
07:49The recipient is sharp enough to realize something about the timing doesn't sit right.
07:53His former partner should have reached out much earlier,
07:55so he rushes to his place.
07:57When he gets there and finds the doorknob broken,
08:00he senses something is wrong, so he arms himself.
08:02He gains access and starts calling out,
08:05but there's no answer, which makes him more anxious.
08:08All he can hear is the creaking sound of a door swinging open and shut.
08:13Just by the exit, the detective's body lies lifeless,
08:16with sound coming from that same door,
08:18and a bright light flashing on Max's face with each swing.
08:21Before he can react, he's attacked by a masked figure
08:24who kicks him in the face and clearly intends to end him.
08:27He loses a lot of blood in seconds and drops his gun,
08:30but he manages to escape a final blow by pulling out the backup weapon from his ankle holster and firing.
08:35The attacker may have been hit, but as the shot rings out, the sky turns red.
08:39He wakes up in a hospital bed and finds BB,
08:41an old associate who's now retired, sitting by him.
08:45The visitor explains what the authorities think went down at Alex's place,
08:48and from their point of view, suspicion is already falling on Max.
08:53But he doesn't care what anyone thinks.
08:56He'll show up in person and wait for whoever has the guts to say it to his face.
09:00The loss in town has been nothing short of disturbing,
09:03and the news outlets keep tossing theories around,
09:05but no one really knows what's going on.
09:08Everyone's just guessing.
09:09BB takes Max over to Acer Pharmaceutical, his former workplace,
09:13and also where Michelle used to work.
09:15Ms. Horn, the boss, welcomes them at the entrance and offers whatever help she can,
09:20especially regarding Alex's case.
09:22Later in BB's office, he tells his guest about the company's plan to honor Michelle
09:26with an art scholarship in her name.
09:27The man doesn't say much as he's not exactly moved,
09:30but still, it's a decent gesture.
09:33BB then hands over a funeral suit, and the two head out for the service.
09:36Krista, Alex's wife, is drowning in grief,
09:38and the presence of her husband's closest friend only makes things worse.
09:43Her sorrow quickly turns to anger,
09:45and she walks up to her target,
09:47slapping him across the face,
09:49before unloading everything she's been holding in.
09:51She blames Max for pushing her husband too far,
09:54says he never once appreciated him,
09:56and she's convinced that he might still be alive
09:59if the man had just shown a bit of gratitude.
10:02Krista makes it clear that she never wants to see him again.
10:05After the funeral, the former agent gets an unexpected visit
10:08from Jim, the guy from Internal Affairs.
10:11At the office, the investigator tries to ask questions
10:14about everything that's been going on,
10:15and the man in black plays it cool,
10:18answering like it's no big deal.
10:20Jim points out how both Natasha and Alex died
10:22shortly after being around the same person,
10:24but the ex-cop has heard enough.
10:26He gets up and walks out mid-conversation
10:28like he's clocked out for the day.
10:30That doesn't sit well with Jim,
10:31who later pulls BB aside
10:32and basically puts him in charge of keeping tabs on his friend.
10:35He wants BB to keep an eye on him,
10:37dig a little, and maybe get him to open up.
10:40According to Jim, the guy needs serious help.
10:43Leaving the building, the former partner
10:44lets BB think they're leaving together,
10:47but ditches him at the elevator
10:48and heads to the homicide division,
10:51which used to be Alex's old turf.
10:53Everyone there can't believe he showed up.
10:55To them, he's the guy responsible
10:57for the fallen detective's demise,
10:59and they don't hide how they feel,
11:01throwing insults and shade,
11:02while the lone wolf keeps walking straight to the office
11:06that once belonged to his colleague.
11:07He locks the door and starts turning the place upside down,
11:11searching for anything the late officer might have left behind.
11:14Outside, the others are shouting and banging on the door,
11:17completely fed up with his audacity.
11:20By the time Alex's boss finally breaks through,
11:22the man has already gone out the window
11:23with whatever evidence the deceased had been saving for him.
11:26Later that night, BB finds him brooding at the back of a bar.
11:29The ex-agent has already made up his mind
11:31that his friend definitely knew something.
11:33BB, however, isn't entirely convinced.
11:36He figures the other man might have stumbled on something,
11:38but the grieving soul is past theories.
11:41He's certain the truth seeker was snuffed
11:43because of what he knew,
11:44and he doesn't have the patience to argue.
11:46Without another word, the lone figure walks off,
11:48leaving BB.
11:49Eventually, with nowhere else to go,
11:51the ex-cop finds himself wandering dimly lit streets.
11:55That's when he notices a group
11:56moving strangely in the distance,
11:58and he senses something's off.
12:00They look too calculated, like hitmen maybe.
12:03So the wanderer grips his weapon,
12:05already anticipating a fight.
12:07Unfortunately, it's not enough.
12:09As he backs up toward a building,
12:11trying to create space,
12:13he walks straight into Mona's gun.
12:15She doesn't waste time.
12:17Known to be tough,
12:18not exactly the patient type,
12:20and since her sister Natasha's last known contact
12:22was standing right in front of her,
12:24she's not about to let things slide.
12:26So he kneels,
12:28and every question she asks is followed by a punch,
12:31as if the answers depend on how much damage his jaw can take.
12:34But the man honestly doesn't know
12:36how his wallet ended up with her sister.
12:39Eventually, he gets a few words in.
12:40He says Natasha's casualty is connected to Michelle's and Alex's, too,
12:44but he's proposing a partnership to solve the cases.
12:47The new allies stop at an abandoned building,
12:50and as they make their way to the third floor,
12:52they hear someone screaming in a high pitch that's guttural
12:55and definitely not okay.
12:57It's Owen,
12:58the last person Natasha called before she died,
13:01and he's in total chaos,
13:03clawing at the air and muttering nonsense,
13:05also covered in sweat,
13:07terrified out of his mind,
13:08and barely aware that the two even stepped in.
13:11They try to talk to him,
13:12but he keeps going on about what happened to the woman.
13:15Then, without warning,
13:16it's like something takes over him
13:18and makes him start walking backwards,
13:21mumbling about wings and salvation,
13:23heading straight for an opening at the edge of the building,
13:25where he falls straight down
13:26and lands hard on a car below.
13:29Unbeknownst to them,
13:30Jack is nearby, watching.
13:31Later, the reluctant duo visit a tattoo artist
13:34and inquire about the strange symbol found on Owen.
13:37The artist identifies it as a Norse Valkyr myth tattoo,
13:41and according to legend,
13:42the only way to reach heaven is through a violent sacrifice.
13:45Back in the old days,
13:46large birds supposedly circled over battlefields,
13:49choosing who deserved salvation.
13:51Meanwhile, Jack is having his own fun.
13:53Somewhere far from moral decency,
13:55he's presiding over the torture of a man tied to a chair.
13:58He taunts the poor guy with a vial,
14:00letting him taste just a drop,
14:02and it's enough to supercharge him,
14:04enough to make him tear out of the chair.
14:06The rest of the liquid was spilled earlier,
14:08and Jack has a plan.
14:09While the man laps up what's left of the liquid gold,
14:12the sadist pulls out a machete,
14:14and what follows is brutal and very final.
14:17The journey continues for the unlikely team,
14:19and although the former detective drives them to an old building,
14:23he's not even allowed to hang around because it's Lincoln's turf,
14:26and Lincoln doesn't exactly do visitors.
14:29Mona heads in while the ex-detective waits,
14:31and once inside,
14:32she wastes no time asking what they're up against.
14:35With her sister gone,
14:36and more deaths piling up,
14:38she needs clarity.
14:39Lincoln doesn't hesitate,
14:40and he tells her the tattoos they've seen
14:42aren't just creepy symbols,
14:44but are devil's marks.
14:45According to him,
14:47something dark is moving through the town,
14:49and unfortunately,
14:50it's not done yet.
14:51He even names the person behind it all,
14:53and apparently,
14:54Jack's hideout is called the Ragnarok.
14:56Naturally,
14:57Mona wants to know how her new partner fits into all this,
15:00but Lincoln doesn't have good news.
15:02He warns her that the man she came with
15:03has uncovered things he was never supposed to,
15:06and because of that,
15:07strange things keep happening around him.
15:09He's convinced that anyone who stays close to Max
15:11might end up like Natasha.
15:13Meanwhile,
15:14the haunted man is already on the move again
15:15because he can't shake the voices playing in his head,
15:18as there's Doug's riddles,
15:19and Owen's madness.
15:21Soon,
15:21he pulls into Asir Pharmaceutical
15:23and heads straight to the records section,
15:26flipping through his wife's file
15:27until something stops him.
15:29It's Asir's brand logo,
15:30and it's got a wing in it,
15:32the same wing linked to that Norse Valkyr mythology
15:34the tattoo artist mentioned.
15:36So,
15:36the former officer finds BB
15:38and lays it all out,
15:39but things get tense
15:40when he starts pointing fingers.
15:42He's sure Michelle's supervisor,
15:44Jason,
15:44has something to do with this,
15:46especially since her file's incomplete.
15:48BB tries to defend Jason,
15:50but Max isn't buying it,
15:51and because of this,
15:52the older man decides
15:53it's time to get Jim involved,
15:55so he tells him everything.
15:56He starts from the beginning
15:57about how the ex-partner
15:59walked into his house one night
16:00to find men with machetes waiting,
16:02and how he had to fight for his life.
16:04He got two,
16:05but one slipped,
16:06and even though he survived,
16:08it didn't matter
16:08because Michelle didn't.
16:09Eventually,
16:10the shaken supervisor,
16:11Crax,
16:12revealing the deceased's last project
16:14was a top-secret government assignment.
16:16Scientists were ordered
16:17to develop a formula
16:18that would make soldiers superhuman,
16:20but the project went south,
16:22with 99% of the test subjects
16:24biting dust.
16:25The few who did survive
16:27were left with hallucinations
16:28and violent cravings,
16:30and the government shut it down,
16:32but that wasn't the end of it.
16:34The late biochemist
16:35had become a target
16:36after one of the test subjects escaped,
16:39the same one that brutally ended her.
16:41Now, the man in the office
16:42is terrified
16:43and begs her husband to protect him,
16:46promising to spill everything.
16:48This time,
16:49the threat is coming from inside.
16:51Max leads him outside,
16:53but they're met by Aesir's armed security,
16:55and the whistleblower barely gets a word out
16:57before one of them
16:58shoots him clean in the chest.
17:00Caught off guard,
17:01the protaganist fires back
17:02and drops one assailant
17:04before ducking behind a wall.
17:06Bullets start flying across the compound,
17:08hitting everything
17:09but their intended target.
17:11The men aren't just reckless,
17:12it's like they've been ordered
17:13to shoot on sight,
17:15no matter who gets in the way.
17:17The marked man makes a run for it
17:18while taking out a few more,
17:19but he gets clipped in the arm.
17:21Still, he keeps moving
17:22until he runs straight into Jim,
17:24who locks the door behind them
17:25and tells him to turn himself in.
17:27Max refuses,
17:29and for him,
17:30being locked up
17:31just means silencing the truth.
17:32Before the internal affairs officer can argue,
17:35the door bursts open from the other side.
17:37The chaos gives the fugitive
17:38just enough of a window
17:40to slip away from the guards
17:42and from Jim,
17:43who's now furious.
17:44Later,
17:45Mona finds him in hiding
17:46and is stunned by what he's uncovered.
17:48The folder contains everything
17:50about the failed experiment,
17:52Project Valkyr.
17:53There's even a video archive
17:54showing the early trials
17:55with footage of both the supervisors
17:58and the specimens.
17:59The first test subject on screen
18:01is none other than Jack.
18:02He's calm,
18:03smiling,
18:04and clearly enjoying the attention,
18:06talking openly about the drug,
18:08and he says he likes how fearless it makes him,
18:10how the enemy looks when they're terrified.
18:13Max doesn't need any more convincing,
18:15and he's done waiting
18:16because the monster is going down.
18:18Mona warns him to think twice,
18:19but it's no use.
18:21She suspects he isn't afraid of going down,
18:23not if it means being with Michelle
18:25and their daughter again.
18:26And really,
18:27that's the end he's been chasing all along.
18:29Now, he's on the offensive,
18:30storming Ragnarok.
18:32He knocks out the first man at the door
18:34with a blow from his gun,
18:35and when two more guards come charging,
18:37he guns them down without breaking stride.
18:39The Avenger gains access to the storeroom,
18:41where all the drugs are kept in millions of vials
18:44and also produced in-house.
18:46And although it's silent at first,
18:48Jack's men are already on high alert.
18:49They burst in and start firing without aim,
18:52and instead of strategy,
18:54they rely on sheer luck,
18:56hoping at least one stray bullet hits the target.
18:59But the fugitive stays low and hides perfectly,
19:02and when the noise settles for just a second,
19:04he reappears,
19:05and drops the two men with back-to-back shots
19:08from his pump action.
19:09However, he's nearly caught off guard
19:11when a soldier,
19:12positioned at a higher level,
19:13spots him and quietly takes aim.
19:15Yet a small sound betrays the marksman's location,
19:18and the ex-cop falls backward
19:20while firing up,
19:21and with two clean shots,
19:22the sniper eats dust.
19:24Just when things calm down,
19:26the mastermind enters the scene
19:27like he's been waiting for this exact moment.
19:30With his machete in hand,
19:32he charges at the former detective
19:33and pins him to the ground.
19:35And while the man struggles beneath him,
19:38the assailant starts muttering references
19:40to Norse mythology,
19:41almost like a ritual.
19:43The villain raises the blade
19:44and is inches away from striking,
19:46but before it lands,
19:47a sudden gunshot rips through the tension.
19:49BB shows up and fires straight
19:51into the attacker's chest.
19:53The protagonist is shocked,
19:54and although he's grateful,
19:56he immediately asks how BB even knew
19:58he was at Ragnarok.
19:59BB says a few words,
20:01and before the hero can get any answers,
20:03Joe, BB's trusted colleague,
20:05steps in and knocks him out.
20:06Eventually, the lead character regains consciousness,
20:08and when he does,
20:09he finds himself limping ahead,
20:11with handcuffs digging into his wrists
20:13and a gun trained against his back.
20:15The mood is quiet,
20:17and then BB begins to talk.
20:19He explains that Michelle had gotten too close
20:21by poking around and stumbling onto something
20:23that was meant to stay buried.
20:25And so, for BB,
20:27eliminating her wasn't emotional,
20:29but necessary.
20:30After that night,
20:31BB changed completely,
20:33and from that point on,
20:34he decided he would always protect himself first,
20:37even if it meant betraying those
20:39he once called family.
20:40The villain was just another pawn,
20:42and BB hadn't hesitated to take him out either.
20:45After all,
20:46he still has dozens of soldiers at his disposal,
20:48and more waiting if needed.
20:49And then he admits that,
20:50on the night Michelle lost her life,
20:53the lead man had barely missed him.
20:55BB was already there,
20:56watching the entire thing unfold,
20:58standing between the deceased
20:59and the one who still had to live with it.
21:02Max can't stop the tears,
21:03because the one person he trusted,
21:05the one who stuck with him through everything,
21:07is the same one who's been behind all the pain.
21:09And just when it feels like he's already at rock bottom,
21:12BB says he didn't even mind when his dad died,
21:14which is cruel,
21:15and it's pointless.
21:16And it's exactly the kind of thing
21:18you don't say to someone who's already drowning.
21:20While the man is still trying to process that,
21:22BB says everything's already set up,
21:24and the world's not likely to ask questions.
21:27Not when everyone already thinks
21:28he hasn't exactly been doing well lately.
21:30Joe fires,
21:31but Max acts fast and knocks him sideways,
21:34so the bullet misses,
21:35and he throws himself into both opponents,
21:37so they go down,
21:38while he takes off.
21:40He dodges the next wave of gunfire,
21:42and leaps into the freezing river,
21:44cold enough to stop a heart.
21:45So the new villain just assumes that's it,
21:48and the man is done for.
21:49And honestly,
21:50maybe he is,
21:51because the man sinks,
21:53and the cold gets into everything.
21:54His thoughts start fading,
21:56until there's just one thing left,
21:58Michelle.
21:58The whole memory of what used to be
22:00is enough to make him fight again,
22:01even though his body is numb,
22:03and the current is dragging him,
22:04and he's barely able to move.
22:05But he reaches into his pocket,
22:07and he grabs one vial of Valkyr to gulp down.
22:09Something shifts,
22:10and he roars from under the water,
22:12like something wild,
22:13and angry,
22:14and alive.
22:15And a storm of huge black birds answers,
22:18like they've been waiting for him to wake up.
22:20Meanwhile,
22:20Jim is getting grilled by his boss,
22:22for not handling the Max situation,
22:23but he's done pretending everything is fine.
22:25So he calls in the FBI,
22:27because maybe they can do what no one else could.
22:29Now that the FBI is involved,
22:31BB and Joe start panicking properly,
22:33and they come up with a quick escape plan.
22:35While they're moving through the parking lot,
22:37Max shows up and wipes out every single guard without blinking.
22:40But the main culprits still manage to slip away.
22:44Then BB grabs his phone,
22:45and calls Miss Horn because he needs a chopper.
22:48Now,
22:48the betrayed man keeps coming,
22:50but the birds come back too,
22:51and this time,
22:52they're circling with the shape of Michelle in their center.
22:55And her voice is calling to him.
22:57For a second,
22:58he just stands there,
22:59like none of the chaos matters,
23:01and then he screams.
23:02Not just out of rage,
23:03but out of something deeper.
23:05That energy blasts outward,
23:06sends the birds flying high into the sky.
23:09A guard tries to shoot,
23:10but Mona jumps in just in time,
23:12and tells her partner to stop looking back,
23:14and start ending what needs to be ended.
23:16Then she's off again,
23:17and she finds the sidekick,
23:18who tries to talk slick,
23:20like he always does,
23:21but Mona handles it quickly and smartly,
23:22and runs off again before Aesir's goons can show up.
23:25He still manages to hit one last button
23:27before giving up the ghost,
23:29activating a bomb that goes off
23:30and blows a whole side of the building.
23:32And honestly,
23:33that explosion feels right on cue for Jim and the team.
23:36Max finally corners his nemesis on the rooftop,
23:39but the opponent shoots him first with the defender,
23:42taking the hit,
23:42and now the other man is suddenly out of bullets now.
23:45He then tries talking again,
23:46trying to smooth his way out of it like the old days,
23:49but his former friend isn't here for speeches.
23:52So he shoots the retiree right in the heart,
23:54and it's quite simple and final.
23:57When it's done,
23:58the troubled guy just falls to his knees,
24:00because he's got nothing left,
24:02while the guards surround him.
24:03He starts mumbling those same weird likes and dislikes
24:06from the beginning,
24:07like the whole nightmare just looped right back
24:10to where it all started.
24:11So he's got nothing left.
