00:00Anthony DiLorenzo joins us now live on the phone with some more information.
00:04Anthony?
00:05Hello, Logan and Lori.
00:06I can tell you the scene right now, we're here at the fire department, which is serving
00:10as a staging area for parents to pick their children up, most of which have already gone
00:14home with their parents, the kids that were okay, that were evacuated from the school.
00:18They told the parents to report here to the Sandy Hook Fire Department on Dickinson.
00:22They got their kids.
00:23Such a dramatic and emotional scene for lots of parents who are coming here and just holding
00:28their children tight, knowing that they were safe and sound back in their arms after the
00:32unknown when they just got that call, hearing that there was a gunman inside of their children's
00:37school.
00:38So for a lot of parents, a big sigh of relief, a lot of tears are being shed this morning
00:43and this afternoon here.
00:45One parent is joining me right now, David Freeman, his child and two children rather
00:49go to another school in town, but in the immediate moment of news, he had really no idea what
00:55was going on.
00:56Can you walk me through what happened around 930?
01:00From the emergency response system in town, Newtown, that all schools were in lockdown
01:05and there was a shooter at one of the schools.
01:08We were not informed of the exact school.
01:11So immediately, you know, I got in my car and was heading towards my children's school
01:17and found out that it was at a different school.
01:20And I came right down to the scene and as I know some parents whose kids who attend
01:26the Sandy Hook school, it was a very sobering feeling that I got, you know, coming down
01:34to see the scene here and to see these parents who are in complete, you know, complete shock
01:42and just to be here to comfort them and to be part of it.
01:46It's unbelievable that something like this in our town could happen.
01:50I know that that tends to be said a lot by other towns, but, you know, this truly is
01:56a small Newtown and it really, really is a shocker.
02:00And your kids are okay there in one of the other schools that was in lockdown.
02:04But take me through that unknown and what was going through your mind at that moment
02:07that was going through a lot of parents' minds.
02:10Yeah, my kids are in lockdown.
02:11They're okay.
02:12They're safe.
02:13We did get another call from the principal of our school saying that they were, that
02:16all the kids were safe.
02:18The feeling that I got was immediate, I was in immediate shock.
02:22I wanted to race to my kids' school, hug them, hold them, be with them, take them home and
02:30comfort them.
02:31And, you know, it's actually still a little nerve-wracking not having my kids next to
02:36me, not knowing that I have them in my hands, although I do have trust and faith in our
02:45school system.
02:46And I'm very proud to be part of this community that is so caring and concerned.
02:54And that's something I say.
02:55Okay, can you tell me whether or not that they practiced lockdowns and drilled like
02:59this?
03:00So if something, God forbid, was to happen like it did today, that they would know what
03:03to do and how to react?
03:07I would say they probably do.
03:09They seem to be very well aware of how to do it and they're good at it.
03:16I've never heard of them to do it, but I'm sure that they do.
03:21I mean, our kids come home, you know, once a week saying that they have a fire drill,
03:26so I'm assuming that that also includes lockdowns.
03:29And you have a friend that works here at the Sandy Hook School.
03:32What have you heard?
03:33Well, I just heard, there's mixed reports going on right now, but I heard that the principal
03:38has been injured and there's two shooters, also that the children are now safe with their
03:48respective parents.
03:49And we should point out, not all children we can account for.
03:53Right now, I just had a word with the assistant fire chief and said they're still at the school
03:57right now going through and trying to account for each student to make sure that they know
04:01where everyone is, if any students are injured, who those students are, and any more students
04:06that need to be treated.
04:08So still a fluid situation going on right now at the Sandy Hook School.
04:11So Dave, thank you very much for joining us this morning.
04:13We're glad your children are safe and good luck to you guys.
04:16And Logan and Lori, I can also tell you that I've seen members from the FBI, the ATF, and
04:23as Lori was talking about before, various agencies here from the state that are still
04:27responding.
04:28Just a few minutes ago, there were still ambulances leaving from the Sandy Hook School here on
04:32Dickinson.
04:33They didn't have their lights or sirens on.
04:35They were just pulling out as normal.
04:37So that could either be a good thing or a bad thing, meaning there were no more people
04:41to transport to the hospital, but they were still accounting for the injured at that point,
04:46and they were too gravely injured to be transported.
04:48Definitely a situation that we're keeping an eye on here, and we'll report back just
04:53as soon as we learn more.
04:54Back to you guys.
04:55Anthony, I know you're at the fire department there, and it's hard to get more information.
04:59We've been reading some tweets that possibly a student's father might have been the shooter.
05:04Are you getting any information concerning that?
05:07No, Logan.
05:08Unfortunately, all that information is still being held close to the vest by authorities.
05:12Again, as we've been talking about, waiting for that press briefing from the state police
05:17where hopefully all those details will be released.
05:19But as that father just mentioned, we heard that the principal possibly was among the
05:24injured here.
05:25In fact, I just saw Governor Malloy has just arrived here on scene with his staff.
05:30He's heading into the schoolyard right now at the Sandy Hook School.
05:33So Governor Dan Malloy has now responded here to this very tragic day in Newtown where we're
05:38hearing reports of multiple people shot after a gunman stormed into classrooms, into this
05:44school, and opened fire.
05:46And we are hearing again that there were fatalities associated with this situation.
05:51So again, the governor coming here to lend his support, his help, and sort of figure
05:55out what's next for this town and what's next for the state.
05:59Anthony, if I recall correctly, did you speak with the principal's daughter who said that
06:04she was looking for the principal the last time we talked?
06:08Yeah, I did.
06:09In fact, yeah, she was with a friend.
06:11They were emotional.
06:12They were teary-eyed.
06:13And they were rushing to the school because obviously they got the news.
06:16She knows her mom works here, but she hadn't heard from her mom.
06:20So certainly not, definitely an uneasy feeling for her daughter just to not get any word
06:25from her.
06:26I don't know exactly whether or not she knew or in fact that her mom was among the injured,
06:29but those are some of the reports that we are getting at this point.
06:33She said her mom had worked here for just about two years.
