00:00
And I'm just...
00:02
Now, you know what would really help?
00:04
Um, because I did...
00:06
I should have, I could have five of these mics.
00:08
I should have just brought a bunch of them.
00:10
We could walk the paths around.
00:12
No, you guys could just have your
00:14
mics cuddled right up. Yeah, I'll just have a link.
00:16
Yeah, just get right under the arm there and uh...
00:18
I'll get one for uh...
00:20
No, I'll get one too.
00:22
We love talking like this.
00:24
This is my favorite.
00:26
Yeah, that's what I thought, Ethan.
00:28
This is more cuddly than we've been all week.
00:30
Ever. Actually, this is probably
00:32
more than we would ever do.
00:34
Ever?
00:36
Like, when there's a...
00:38
No, not like that, but like when there's a sofa,
00:40
are you gonna do this? You're like...
00:42
No, you're gonna be like, oh yeah.
00:44
You're gonna be like, get off me.
00:46
I know, give me a little space. Finally, we're home.
00:48
I got some.
00:50
It feels so good.
00:52
Oh, you're like, I like it!
00:54
Now we're like out of work mode.
00:56
As soon as this happens, I'm not in work mode anymore.
00:58
And so that's why you can't do it.
01:00
I know, we can't...
01:02
A little trouser turn?
01:04
No, no, honestly, I don't want to talk about that.
01:06
But that's...anyway, that's not what I want to do.
01:08
I don't have a chest pocket.
01:10
What? Ew, what are we talking about?
01:12
We're not.
01:14
I don't want to know what we're talking about.
01:16
Absolutely not.
01:20
Is your lady friend coming? No.
01:22
Oh, okay.
01:24
I mean...
01:26
Fine.
01:28
I thought we would just want to do the teachers.
01:30
I thought it would be funny, though, because...
01:32
I'll go get her.
01:34
Well, I can, because they can.
01:36
And then you start talking about
01:38
where you're from real quick.
01:40
I can get her to do that.
01:42
She's gonna be like, what?
01:44
No, she'll be like, I came because they're here.
01:46
Is that how she'll say it?
01:48
I know, right?
01:50
I've been called the songbird of a generation,
01:52
but...
01:54
It's true.
01:56
I'm a videographer.
01:58
I have Jermaine Campbell videography,
02:00
and in 2018, I was
02:02
doing a little barter with Mary,
02:04
the organizer here,
02:06
and she said if I make some films
02:08
and capture the essence of this wonderful
02:10
phenomenon, that
02:12
I could get free admission here
02:14
and come hang out, and we've been doing it ever since,
02:16
and I brought my whole family and my little kids,
02:18
and we'll be coming back as long as they'll let us.
02:20
And this year,
02:22
this year, you showed a video before
02:24
that will probably be released, will be released
02:26
soon, of a video of
02:28
just what this place is about, capturing all the magic
02:30
and stuff, and before that, we thought maybe this
02:32
was just a scam. This has been a scam
02:34
for, you know, six, seven years just to get,
02:36
just to come here, but no, he proved it.
02:38
He proved it.
02:40
Not even any batteries in the camera.
02:42
Hold on a second. A little closer here.
02:44
It's a great scheme.
02:46
Thank you.
02:48
Yeah, I respect it.
02:50
And we got to watch it in the participants
02:52
concert, which is on Thursday night when all the
02:54
participants get to come up and perform, but we started
02:56
with his filming, it was like a little premiere,
02:58
it was a special thing for all of us to see,
03:00
to see it
03:02
showed so eloquently what this place is,
03:04
and all the capturing the power, and the
03:06
humor, and the fun, and the family,
03:08
and the music, and the spirituality,
03:10
all of it, you captured it
03:12
all there. It's really great.
03:14
Yeah, I appreciate that.
03:18
Oh
03:44
I think this might be a fool's errand
03:46
here.
03:48
I got nothing better to do.
03:50
And what's your film called?
04:16
Well, I don't know
04:18
I don't know what I
04:20
what will it be called?
04:22
Fort Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.
04:24
Exactly, that's what I'll call it. Fort Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival.
04:26
And
04:28
nothing too creative, but
04:30
does the job.
04:32
That's what it's about. It's about 50 minutes
04:34
long, and
04:36
I'll make a couple quick little cuts, and then
04:38
release it to the public, let it out to the wild.
04:40
Something that we call
04:42
a round robin.
04:44
Anybody have any idea what that
04:46
might be?
04:48
Do you think it's a bird? Oh, you do?
04:50
What do you got?
04:54
Oh, I guess I can't hear you.
04:56
Well
05:00
I married my
05:02
wife after I did
05:04
an acting degree down at the
05:06
University of Victoria in
05:08
British Columbia. She was
05:10
studying there too, and
05:12
we went up to
05:14
her community, which is the
05:16
Gwasala-Naukhtau Nation up at the top of
05:18
Vancouver Island, and her people are
05:20
just rife with beautiful stories and
05:22
mythology and songs, and a lot of
05:24
really important language revitalization
05:26
because colonization
05:28
really ran amok
05:30
on their people and devastated
05:32
a lot of their practices and traditions,
05:34
and a lot of people have been holding
05:36
on tight to them and reinstilling
05:38
them in the youth. So
05:40
a lot of the elders asked me to help
05:42
tell the stories and trusted me with the stories,
05:44
and I started making films to try to
05:46
help preserve some of those things and to build them
05:48
up and amplify them,
05:50
and one story led to another,
05:52
led to another, and then I started traveling
05:54
all over the province, helping other people
05:56
in other nations do the same thing,
05:58
and before you know it, I just, you know,
06:00
I wasn't teaching anymore, and I was doing film work
06:02
full-time, so I dedicate
06:04
most of my talents to
06:06
indigenous content up
06:08
up north in Canada there,
06:10
and then some
06:12
good, mostly African-American
06:14
content here to the blues down here.
06:16
Nice. Yeah. Thanks for being
06:18
on my show. Oh, hey, well there we go.
06:28
You're vivacious and kind of like
06:30
a Spice Girl with your
06:32
personality. He was like
06:34
overalls really sick.
06:36
Okay.
06:58
Okay.
07:00
Nick and Ethan just a little closer, would you please?
07:02
There you go.
07:04
There you go.
07:06
Saddle up behind him there.
07:08
Let me hold his waist.
07:10
Gently though.
07:12
Plenty of outtakes.
07:14
Gently.
07:16
Okay, so my absolutely
07:18
gut-busting, hilarious idea
07:20
would be, you know, Ethan was here
07:22
first, so I started
07:24
in whatever year you started,
07:26
and then I told all them about it, and then Nick
07:28
would talk about, well, then that's why I came,
07:30
and then she'd go, that's why I came, and then you
07:32
at the end, you got a little comment, sort of chariot up.
07:34
Well, then they came, and that's why I came.
07:38
We'll try it out. We'll try it out. See if we can get some
07:40
comical time in here.
07:42
Alright.
07:44
Ethan. Ethan. That's me.
07:46
My name's Ethan Limelon. I came
07:48
here, my first year was in
07:50
2017,
07:52
and
07:54
I think I'm in, yeah, wait, wait, just say
07:56
that. Let's do it last.
07:58
My name's Ethan, I came in 2018.
08:00
My name's Nick,
08:02
I came because he came.
08:04
What's your name?
08:06
I don't know what my name is. Valerie.
08:08
Valerie, I came because he came, and then we'll
08:10
do a little, and then we'll do a bit of a follow-up thing
08:12
with who
08:14
y'all are. Well, my name's Ethan Limelon,
08:16
I started coming here in 2017.
08:18
My name's Nick Pence, and I came
08:20
here because he came here. I'm Valerie
08:22
Kirchhoff, and I came because they came
08:24
here. I'm Karen Kirchhoff,
08:26
and I came here because they came here.
08:28
Let's try it once more.
08:30
We got enough. I was like, what did I do?
08:32
That's where I got.
08:34
Mine is so hot. Mine?
08:36
Yeah. Which one?
08:38
Yours. Mine? Yours.
08:40
It's so hot. I don't want up here. I can tell you that
08:42
very much. I don't want to be like this.
08:44
I know, but don't put your jacket down.
08:46
Okay, I got it. Thank you.
08:48
Thank you. Okay.
08:50
Oh, so I did it again?
08:52
Yes. I told you, we're not used to this.
08:54
This cuddling thing. No, no, no.
08:56
It's not the cuddling, it's the...
08:58
You're like, you're like
09:00
borrowing me like a cane.
09:02
Alright,
09:04
here we go. On three. One, two,
09:06
three. My name is
09:08
Ethan Lion-1. I started teaching
09:10
here in 2017.
09:12
My name's Nick Pence. I came here
09:14
in 2023
09:16
because Ethan came here.
09:18
I'm Valerie Kirchhoff, and I
09:20
came this year
09:22
because they came here.
09:24
I'm Karen Kirchhoff, and I
09:26
came here this year because they came here.
09:28
Alright, Ethan, tell me a little
09:30
bit about this place. Alright, well
09:32
this place
09:34
is a haven for people
09:36
who really care about
09:38
the acoustic blues tradition,
09:40
the pre-war stuff,
09:42
on all the different instruments.
09:48
It's just a very special place
09:50
where we can all come together,
09:52
students and faculty
09:54
alike, and share in this
09:56
great thing and build a community
09:58
and strengthen those bonds
10:00
that make being a musician
10:02
worth being a musician.
10:04
Nick, how does
10:06
this differ from other places,
10:08
other gigs that you've been to?
10:12
So, do you write music?
10:14
Of course.
10:16
And I just saw you perform.
10:18
Tell me a little bit about
10:20
how you used to
10:22
write those crazy sketches.
10:24
It's done by inspiration, so
10:26
I don't have any contract
10:28
songs usually that I
10:30
sit down and say, hey, I'm going to write me a song about.
10:32
Nah, it just comes from
10:34
inspiration, sometimes in dreams
10:36
and other ways, so that's the main
10:38
way that I write songs.
10:40
You have to be inspired.
10:42
Is there someone you're just
10:44
itching to play a particular song with?
10:46
Me? Yeah, who are you looking to hang with?
10:48
I always like playing with Andrew Ali.
10:50
He's just
10:52
the most friendly, fierce fella
10:54
you can fool around with.
10:56
And, uh, musically.
10:58
Yeah.
11:00
Oh yeah, we didn't tell you
11:02
what we do on Tuesdays.
11:04
I'm glad you came Friday,
11:06
because Tuesday's really crazy.
11:08
But I'm on camera
11:10
if you want to check it out.
11:12
Yeah, right.
11:14
It's always fun hanging with John Tavius.
11:16
He makes you feel welcome.
11:18
It's hard to start naming names
11:20
because we got
11:22
to play with John Maxwell
11:24
and that was really special too.
11:26
Mary Flower. She's going to come to St. Louis
11:28
and play with all of us in October.
11:30
If there was a slightly bigger gap here, there would be Mary Flower.
11:32
I love watching you guys get along, man.
11:34
Tell a little bit about last year.
11:36
I thought you guys knew each other forever,
11:38
but you're just like a sweetheart to her.
11:40
Yeah, we met Mary
11:42
last year and
11:44
I was nervous.
11:46
It was my first year.
11:48
I was scared out of my pants
11:50
to even be here.
11:52
So I was walking into the class
11:54
and she stopped me and told me
11:56
that she had liked my playing from the night before
11:58
and I was like,
12:00
I had to stop crying
12:02
before teaching this class.
12:04
We just hit it off and we started playing a little bit.
12:06
Last year, John Atkinson was here
12:08
and he was recording.
12:10
So we learned some of her songs
12:12
and she took us out to breakfast one day
12:14
and she just immediately
12:16
became part of the family.
12:18
We play the same, we like the same
12:20
approach to grooves.
12:22
So now we see each other
12:24
and it's special.
12:26
We text and call each other through the year.
12:42
Oh Alexa
12:44
Oh
12:46
Oh Dee Dee
12:48
Oh Alexa
12:50
Oh Dee Dee
12:52
Oh Alexa
12:54
Oh Alexa
12:58
It's been up a long tour.
13:00
You're carrying her guitar for her and everything.
13:02
She was off of a long tour
13:04
yesterday.
13:06
But also that's Nick's way.
13:08
When Nick finds a way he can help
13:10
or care, he's going to do that thing.
13:12
That's what we're trying to do
13:14
with some of the elders too.
13:16
It comes out of you naturally.
13:18
It comes out of me very naturally.
13:20
Changing her strings and carrying her guitar
13:22
and helping her with her luggage.
13:24
I think that's why
13:26
those are the moments that make this a family.
13:28
You just come in as a new
13:30
person and you're just right in there.
13:32
Oh yeah, and the elders do
13:34
get treated nicely.
13:36
Jimmy Duffer got treated really nice.
13:38
Everybody does.
13:40
It's nice to see that coming out of people naturally.
13:42
Really nice.
13:44
What do you think? Any last ideas?
13:46
Let's do this again.
13:48
Let's do it again next year.
13:52
What do you think this year?
13:56
I'm really compelled.
13:58
Act like I'm still right there.
14:00
I want to get a couple of fun shots from the side there.
14:02
Smiling.
14:04
Laughing.
14:08
Something.
14:10
Because today,
14:12
there's a lot of processing that goes on on Saturday
14:14
as you're trying to work through it all.
14:16
What's that?
14:18
We stuck around.
14:20
Oh yes, absolutely.
14:22
I've never done that before, so it was the first time ever.
14:24
I love that.
14:26
Today, I was still
14:28
relaxed.
14:30
The people that were leaving, the difference of
14:32
how you were feeling versus them.
14:34
Waking up the next day,
14:36
with nowhere to go,
14:38
with nothing to do,
14:40
but play music and really enjoy
14:42
the space all the way.
14:44
You miss all the activity, but at the same time,
14:46
you don't.
14:48
What time do we need to do the recording?
14:50
I think next year we should have a recording
14:52
for people.
14:54
Sunday.
14:56
Even just Sunday.
14:58
We can all have a meal and have a day.
15:00
That process of
15:02
still being with each other
15:04
and mentally
15:06
wrapping it up and getting
15:08
excited for the next year.
15:10
That's the cool thing.
15:12
It is kind of like,
15:14
oh, I can't believe it's over, but then you're already thinking
15:16
like, okay, but it does happen.
15:18
That's the cherry on top.
15:20
It's a consolation.
15:22
Tuesday, I was like, ah shit, it's only Tuesday.
15:24
Yeah, that's always, don't let it fool you.
15:26
What the fuck?
15:28
Don't let Tuesdays fool you.
15:30
Hey, thanks a lot.
15:32
Yeah, it was fun.
15:34
Just chatting.
15:36
That's right. Who knows what we'll do with it,
15:38
but you know, it's in the pocket.
15:40
That's the most important part, is to get
15:42
it recorded, right?
15:44
Karen Kirchhoff.
15:46
Nick Pence.
15:48
Ethan Leinwand.
15:50
Valerie Kirchhoff.
15:54
I was saying it right,
15:56
but I wasn't sure until
15:58
we were saying it before he came to St. Louis,
16:00
and then the first thing he said in the car
16:02
was like, Leinwand.
16:04
I was like, Leinwand.
16:06
I always put Sonny's last name on you.
16:08
You call me Ethan Leland?
16:10
All the time.
16:12
Oh yeah, shit.
16:14
If Sonny were my brother,
16:16
that would be another layer.
16:18
That would be another hole.
16:20
I would marry him.
16:22
He's a nigger to talk to.
16:28
All right.
16:30
We're basically all adopting each other.
16:32
Yeah, I'm cool.
16:34
I'll take care of you when you can't wash the soap home.
16:36
Hey man, absolutely.
16:42
It's so special that you do this.
16:44
It really is.
16:46
So many things that people don't capture this way that go on every year.
16:48
You have the videos, man.
16:50
It's really special.
16:58
You
17:00
You
17:02
You
17:04
You
17:06
You
17:08
You
17:10
You
17:12
You
17:14
You
17:16
