02:28just what this place is about, capturing all the magic

02:30and stuff, and before that, we thought maybe this

02:32was just a scam. This has been a scam

02:34for, you know, six, seven years just to get,

02:36just to come here, but no, he proved it.

02:52concert, which is on Thursday night when all the

02:56with his filming, it was like a little premiere,

02:58it was a special thing for all of us to see,

03:02showed so eloquently what this place is,

03:04and all the capturing the power, and the

03:06humor, and the fun, and the family,

03:08and the music, and the spirituality,

03:10all of it, you captured it

03:12all there. It's really great.

05:00I married my

05:02wife after I did

05:04an acting degree down at the

05:06University of Victoria in

05:08British Columbia. She was

05:10studying there too, and

05:12we went up to

05:14her community, which is the

05:16Gwasala-Naukhtau Nation up at the top of

05:18Vancouver Island, and her people are

05:20just rife with beautiful stories and

05:22mythology and songs, and a lot of

05:24really important language revitalization

05:26because colonization

05:28really ran amok

05:30on their people and devastated

05:32a lot of their practices and traditions,

05:34and a lot of people have been holding

05:36on tight to them and reinstilling

05:38them in the youth. So

05:40a lot of the elders asked me to help

05:42tell the stories and trusted me with the stories,

05:44and I started making films to try to

05:46help preserve some of those things and to build them

05:48up and amplify them,

05:50and one story led to another,

05:52led to another, and then I started traveling

05:54all over the province, helping other people

05:56in other nations do the same thing,

05:58and before you know it, I just, you know,

06:00I wasn't teaching anymore, and I was doing film work

06:02full-time, so I dedicate

06:04most of my talents to

06:06indigenous content up

06:08up north in Canada there,

06:10and then some

06:12good, mostly African-American

06:14content here to the blues down here.

09:34is a haven for people

09:36who really care about

09:38the acoustic blues tradition,

09:40the pre-war stuff,

09:42on all the different instruments.

09:48It's just a very special place

09:50where we can all come together,

09:52students and faculty

09:54alike, and share in this

09:56great thing and build a community

09:58and strengthen those bonds

10:00that make being a musician

10:02worth being a musician.

10:04Nick, how does

10:06this differ from other places,

10:08other gigs that you've been to?

10:12So, do you write music?

10:14Of course.

10:16And I just saw you perform.

10:18Tell me a little bit about

10:20how you used to

10:22write those crazy sketches.

10:24It's done by inspiration, so

10:26I don't have any contract

10:28songs usually that I

10:30sit down and say, hey, I'm going to write me a song about.

10:32Nah, it just comes from

10:34inspiration, sometimes in dreams

10:36and other ways, so that's the main

10:38way that I write songs.

10:40You have to be inspired.

10:42Is there someone you're just

10:44itching to play a particular song with?

10:46Me? Yeah, who are you looking to hang with?

10:48I always like playing with Andrew Ali.

10:52the most friendly, fierce fella

11:34Tell a little bit about last year.

11:36I thought you guys knew each other forever,

11:38but you're just like a sweetheart to her.

11:40Yeah, we met Mary

11:42last year and

11:44I was nervous.

11:46It was my first year.

11:48I was scared out of my pants

11:50to even be here.

11:52So I was walking into the class

11:54and she stopped me and told me

11:56that she had liked my playing from the night before

11:58and I was like,

12:00I had to stop crying

12:02before teaching this class.

12:04We just hit it off and we started playing a little bit.

12:06Last year, John Atkinson was here

12:08and he was recording.

12:10So we learned some of her songs

12:12and she took us out to breakfast one day

12:14and she just immediately

12:16became part of the family.

12:18We play the same, we like the same

12:20approach to grooves.

12:22So now we see each other

12:24and it's special.

12:26We text and call each other through the year.

12:58It's been up a long tour.
