00:00Hiya ala al-falaat
00:07Silence is often associated with the characteristics of an introvert
00:18and is mostly looked down upon
00:21Socializing, smooth talking, and a welcoming demeanor
00:28are the it qualities that everyone gravitates to
00:32The individuals with a loud personality are considered to be smarter
00:37wittier and likable
00:40while their counterparts to be arrogant, insecure, and boring
00:47Islam, however, praises the quality of staying silent
00:54It is considered a characteristic that beautifies a believer
00:59and instills modesty
01:01Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
01:04embodied the art of staying silent
01:09and speaking only when necessary
01:12Narrated Anas radiallahu anhum
01:19Allah's Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said
01:23Wisdom consists in keeping silent
01:27and those who practice it
01:30are few
01:31From this we learn many things
01:34and from other ahadith
01:36the concept becomes even clearer
01:38Just taking from this hadith we see
01:41that it is best to be silent
01:44Today
01:46we see people who openly speak
01:49on issues in which they have no knowledge about
01:52Also we see people who continuously talk without any point
01:56in their rambling
01:58We will see, insha'Allah
02:01how this is wrong
02:03through proofs from Quran and Sunnah
02:06And insha'Allah
02:08we will refrain from doing this
02:11as best as we can
02:13A man reviled Abu Bakr
02:16in the presence of Prophet Muhammad
02:19peace be upon him
02:20The Prophet remained seated
02:23He looked pleased and smiled
02:26He insulted Abu Bakr twice
02:29But Abu Bakr controlled himself
02:33and remained silent
02:34He insulted him
02:36for the third time
02:38And Abu Bakr then
02:40let his tongue loose
02:41and responded back
02:43At that the Messenger of Allah
02:45got up and left
02:46Abu Bakr followed
02:48after the Prophet
02:50and said
02:51Messenger of Allah
02:52He insulted me
02:54and you just sat there
02:55Then when I responded
02:57to some of what he said
02:59you became angry
03:01and got up
03:02The Prophet said
03:04There was an angel with you
03:05who was responding to his insults
03:07on your behalf
03:08Then the Prophet said
03:10Abu Bakr
03:11Keep in mind
03:12three things
03:14which are always true
03:16One of which is that
03:18whenever a person is subjected
03:20to an injustice
03:22but leaves the matter to Allah
03:24then Allah will come to his aid
03:27Once
03:29Mu'ad bin Jabal
03:31asked the Prophet
03:32to inform him
03:33of some good work
03:34that would admit him
03:36into Paradise
03:38and distance him
03:39from the Hellfire
03:41The Prophet mentioned to him
03:44the virtues of many good deeds
03:46then said
03:47Shall I inform you
03:49of the foundation
03:51of all of that?
03:52Mu'ad said
03:53Certainly
03:54The Prophet took hold
03:56of his tongue
03:56and said
03:57Restrain yourself
03:59from this
04:00Mu'ad then asked
04:02O Prophet of Allah
04:03Are we held to task
04:05for the things
04:06that we say?
04:07The Prophet replied
04:09May your mother
04:10be bereaved
04:11of you
04:12O Mu'ad
04:13Does anything topple
04:15people headlong
04:16into the Hellfire?
04:18Save the harvests
04:19of their tongues?
04:20We should avoid
04:24speaking ill of others
04:26We should rather
04:27remain silent
04:28unless we are
04:30seeking justice
04:31for some wrong
04:33that has been
04:35perpetrated against us
04:36Allah says
04:38Allah does not like
04:40that evil should be
04:41mentioned in public
04:42except by one
04:44who has been done
04:46in justice
04:46and Allah is all
04:48hearing
04:48all knowing
04:50Our tongues
04:52are like
04:53double-edged swords
04:54They can work
04:56for us
04:57and against us
04:58both
04:59in this world
05:00and the hereafter
05:01We will be held
05:03accountable
05:03for what we say
05:05Allah tells us
05:07He does not
05:09utter a statement
05:10except
05:11that there is
05:12an observer
05:12by Him
05:13ready to record it
05:15The Prophet said
05:16Indeed a servant
05:18will speak a word
05:19pleasing to Allah
05:20that he thinks
05:22to be insignificant
05:23but because of it
05:25Allah raises him
05:27by many degrees
05:28And indeed a servant
05:30will speak a word
05:31displeasing to Allah
05:32that he thinks
05:34to be insignificant
05:35but because of it
05:37he will consign him
05:40to the Hellfire
05:41We must be vigilant
05:43not to speak
05:44falsehood
05:45We must think
05:47about what we are saying
05:48and the possible
05:50consequences
05:51of our words
05:52before we go ahead
05:53and speak
05:54The Prophet said
05:56a man
05:57might speak a word
05:59without thinking
06:00about its implications
06:01but because of it
06:03he will plunge
06:05into the Hellfire
06:06further
06:07than the distance
06:09between the East
06:09and the West
06:10and now we comment
06:12on the meaning
06:14of this Hadith
06:15saying
06:16this Hadith
06:18encourages us
06:19to guard our tongues
06:22a person who wants
06:24to speak
06:24should think upon
06:26what he is about
06:27to say
06:28before he utters it
06:29if it then
06:30shows itself
06:31to have some benefit
06:33to it
06:34he may speak it
06:36otherwise
06:37he should refrain
06:39from doing so
06:40In Surah Al-Imran
06:43Allah says
06:43Behold
06:44you are they
06:46who disputed
06:47about that of which
06:49you had knowledge
06:50why then
06:52do you dispute
06:52about that of which
06:55you have no knowledge
06:56and Allah knows
06:58while you do not know
07:00We see from this
07:01ayah of the Quran
07:02that we should not
07:03dispute
07:04or speak
07:04without knowledge
07:05This should be
07:07enough proof
07:08for those
07:08who want to comment
07:09on every issue
07:10discussed
07:12even though
07:12they do not know
07:13the correct rulings
07:15or responses
07:17to them
07:17These people
07:19want to do
07:20Ijtihad
07:20on these issues
07:22yet they have
07:23no right
07:23to do so
07:24When a person
07:26falls into a situation
07:28where a discussion
07:30leads into something
07:31he does not
07:32have knowledge on
07:33This person
07:35faces two choices
07:36If people
07:38in this situation
07:39truly are righteous
07:40they will simply
07:42say I don't know
07:43and leave it like that
07:45But for those
07:46who are arrogant
07:47or ignorant
07:48they will try
07:49their best
07:49to answer the question
07:50even though
07:52they may have
07:53no idea
07:53what the Islamic
07:54stance
07:55or ruling
07:55may be
07:56The above
07:58ayah
07:58puts it
07:59simple
08:00and is something
08:01we should reflect
08:02on every day
08:03of our lives
08:04We should take
08:05from the example
08:06of those
08:06pious people
08:07who came
08:08before us
08:09People such as
08:10Imam Ahmad
08:11ibn Hanbal
08:11and Imam Shafi'i
08:13who when faced
08:15with a question
08:16they did not know
08:17the answer to
08:18simply said
08:19I do not know
08:20and left it like that
08:22This simple phrase
08:23shows the sincerity
08:25and wisdom
08:26in such men
08:27It shows that
08:28they are seeking
08:29knowledge
08:29and not spreading
08:31it for self-recognition
08:32but rather
08:33to be closer
08:34to Allah
08:35the Lord
08:37of all the worlds
08:37One of the principles
08:39we learn
08:40from Islam
08:41is that being silent
08:42is better
08:43than speaking
08:44The Prophet
08:45said
08:47whoever is silent
08:48will be successful
08:50Also we learn
08:51that the tongue
08:52is a source
08:53of evil
08:54and that a person
08:55who guards his tongue
08:56and private parts
08:58will enter Jannah
08:59Again we see
09:01that very people
09:02who do this
09:03many of which
09:04do not know
09:05the consequences
09:06of their actions
09:08We learn
09:09from other hadith
09:11that one word
09:12can cause you
09:13to enter
09:13hellfire
09:14for 70 years
09:16or seasons
09:17Such a big punishment
09:18yet we never
09:20hold our tongues
09:21and we continue
09:22to talk nonsense
09:24without thinking
09:25twice about it
09:26We also learn
09:28from the Prophet
09:28that we should
09:31say good
09:31or be quiet
09:32Now you may say
09:34I do say good
09:35So what is the problem?
09:37If we study
09:38the Quran
09:39we learn
09:40that the best
09:41things to talk
09:42about
09:43and the most
09:44recommended are
09:45speaking for the
09:47sake of helping
09:48in charity
09:48speaking to order
09:50good
09:50and speaking
09:52to unite people
09:52in good
09:53These are the
09:55three topics
09:56we should be
09:57concentrating on
09:58when we speak
09:58Are we trying
09:59to help our
10:00Muslim brothers
10:00and sisters
10:01when we speak?
10:02Are we trying
10:03to order good
10:04upon ourselves
10:05and others
10:06when we speak?
10:07Are we trying
10:08to unite people
10:09in good?
10:10Bringing the
10:11Muslims together
10:12when we speak?
10:12If you can't
10:14answer yes
10:14to at least
10:15one of these
10:16then there is
10:17a serious problem
10:18that needs
10:18correcting
10:19Truly it is
10:21a sickness
10:21in the heart
10:22for one to
10:23speak about
10:23evil
10:24or issues
10:25he has no
10:26knowledge in
10:27This is something
10:28outside of Islam
10:29So why do we
10:31do it?
10:31We claim to be
10:32striving for the
10:33sake of Allah
10:34yet we do not
10:36even adopt
10:37the proper
10:37mannerisms
10:38of a believer
10:39This is a test
10:41from Allah
10:41subhanahu wa ta'ala
10:42Something which
10:44is easy upon
10:44one who looks
10:46at his own
10:46mistakes and
10:48tries his best
10:49to correct them
10:50There are many
10:51hadith and
10:52ayat from
10:53the Quran
10:54that speak
10:55on this issue
10:56but there is
10:57not much need
10:58to get into
10:59every single
11:00one of them
11:00The main point
11:02is we should
11:03not speak
11:04unless needed
11:05and what we
11:06speak of should
11:07be something
11:07productive
11:08Every day
11:09we should
11:10analyze ourselves
11:11and truly
11:12think about
11:13what we did
11:14in our day
11:15and what we
11:17may have said
11:18This is the only
11:19method of
11:20correct
11:21to find our
11:22own mistakes
11:23and work on
11:24improving
11:25what we are
11:26weak in
11:26Do we wish
11:28to be amongst
11:28those people
11:29in hellfire
11:31because of what
11:32we may have
11:32said?
11:33This is the
11:34reality
11:34and only we
11:35can safeguard
11:37our tongues
11:37and keep
11:39ourselves
11:39thriving
11:40to be on
11:41the righteous
11:41path
11:42and keep
11:44to be
11:45as
11:46as
11:46as
11:47as
11:49as
11:49You
