Hiya ala al-falaat
00:07
Silence is often associated with the characteristics of an introvert
00:18
and is mostly looked down upon
00:21
Socializing, smooth talking, and a welcoming demeanor
00:28
are the it qualities that everyone gravitates to
00:32
The individuals with a loud personality are considered to be smarter
00:37
wittier and likable
00:40
while their counterparts to be arrogant, insecure, and boring
00:47
Islam, however, praises the quality of staying silent
00:54
It is considered a characteristic that beautifies a believer
00:59
and instills modesty
01:01
Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
01:04
embodied the art of staying silent
01:09
and speaking only when necessary
01:12
Narrated Anas radiallahu anhum
01:19
Allah's Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said
01:23
Wisdom consists in keeping silent
01:27
and those who practice it
01:30
are few
01:31
From this we learn many things
01:34
and from other ahadith
01:36
the concept becomes even clearer
01:38
Just taking from this hadith we see
01:41
that it is best to be silent
01:44
Today
01:46
we see people who openly speak
01:49
on issues in which they have no knowledge about
01:52
Also we see people who continuously talk without any point
01:56
in their rambling
01:58
We will see, insha'Allah
02:01
how this is wrong
02:03
through proofs from Quran and Sunnah
02:06
And insha'Allah
02:08
we will refrain from doing this
02:11
as best as we can
02:13
A man reviled Abu Bakr
02:16
in the presence of Prophet Muhammad
02:19
peace be upon him
02:20
The Prophet remained seated
02:23
He looked pleased and smiled
02:26
He insulted Abu Bakr twice
02:29
But Abu Bakr controlled himself
02:33
and remained silent
02:34
He insulted him
02:36
for the third time
02:38
And Abu Bakr then
02:40
let his tongue loose
02:41
and responded back
02:43
At that the Messenger of Allah
02:45
got up and left
02:46
Abu Bakr followed
02:48
after the Prophet
02:50
and said
02:51
Messenger of Allah
02:52
He insulted me
02:54
and you just sat there
02:55
Then when I responded
02:57
to some of what he said
02:59
you became angry
03:01
and got up
03:02
The Prophet said
03:04
There was an angel with you
03:05
who was responding to his insults
03:07
on your behalf
03:08
Then the Prophet said
03:10
Abu Bakr
03:11
Keep in mind
03:12
three things
03:14
which are always true
03:16
One of which is that
03:18
whenever a person is subjected
03:20
to an injustice
03:22
but leaves the matter to Allah
03:24
then Allah will come to his aid
03:27
Once
03:29
Mu'ad bin Jabal
03:31
asked the Prophet
03:32
to inform him
03:33
of some good work
03:34
that would admit him
03:36
into Paradise
03:38
and distance him
03:39
from the Hellfire
03:41
The Prophet mentioned to him
03:44
the virtues of many good deeds
03:46
then said
03:47
Shall I inform you
03:49
of the foundation
03:51
of all of that?
03:52
Mu'ad said
03:53
Certainly
03:54
The Prophet took hold
03:56
of his tongue
03:56
and said
03:57
Restrain yourself
03:59
from this
04:00
Mu'ad then asked
04:02
O Prophet of Allah
04:03
Are we held to task
04:05
for the things
04:06
that we say?
04:07
The Prophet replied
04:09
May your mother
04:10
be bereaved
04:11
of you
04:12
O Mu'ad
04:13
Does anything topple
04:15
people headlong
04:16
into the Hellfire?
04:18
Save the harvests
04:19
of their tongues?
04:20
We should avoid
04:24
speaking ill of others
04:26
We should rather
04:27
remain silent
04:28
unless we are
04:30
seeking justice
04:31
for some wrong
04:33
that has been
04:35
perpetrated against us
04:36
Allah says
04:38
Allah does not like
04:40
that evil should be
04:41
mentioned in public
04:42
except by one
04:44
who has been done
04:46
in justice
04:46
and Allah is all
04:48
hearing
04:48
all knowing
04:50
Our tongues
04:52
are like
04:53
double-edged swords
04:54
They can work
04:56
for us
04:57
and against us
04:58
both
04:59
in this world
05:00
and the hereafter
05:01
We will be held
05:03
accountable
05:03
for what we say
05:05
Allah tells us
05:07
He does not
05:09
utter a statement
05:10
except
05:11
that there is
05:12
an observer
05:12
by Him
05:13
ready to record it
05:15
The Prophet said
05:16
Indeed a servant
05:18
will speak a word
05:19
pleasing to Allah
05:20
that he thinks
05:22
to be insignificant
05:23
but because of it
05:25
Allah raises him
05:27
by many degrees
05:28
And indeed a servant
05:30
will speak a word
05:31
displeasing to Allah
05:32
that he thinks
05:34
to be insignificant
05:35
but because of it
05:37
he will consign him
05:40
to the Hellfire
05:41
We must be vigilant
05:43
not to speak
05:44
falsehood
05:45
We must think
05:47
about what we are saying
05:48
and the possible
05:50
consequences
05:51
of our words
05:52
before we go ahead
05:53
and speak
05:54
The Prophet said
05:56
a man
05:57
might speak a word
05:59
without thinking
06:00
about its implications
06:01
but because of it
06:03
he will plunge
06:05
into the Hellfire
06:06
further
06:07
than the distance
06:09
between the East
06:09
and the West
06:10
and now we comment
06:12
on the meaning
06:14
of this Hadith
06:15
saying
06:16
this Hadith
06:18
encourages us
06:19
to guard our tongues
06:22
a person who wants
06:24
to speak
06:24
should think upon
06:26
what he is about
06:27
to say
06:28
before he utters it
06:29
if it then
06:30
shows itself
06:31
to have some benefit
06:33
to it
06:34
he may speak it
06:36
otherwise
06:37
he should refrain
06:39
from doing so
06:40
In Surah Al-Imran
06:43
Allah says
06:43
Behold
06:44
you are they
06:46
who disputed
06:47
about that of which
06:49
you had knowledge
06:50
why then
06:52
do you dispute
06:52
about that of which
06:55
you have no knowledge
06:56
and Allah knows
06:58
while you do not know
07:00
We see from this
07:01
ayah of the Quran
07:02
that we should not
07:03
dispute
07:04
or speak
07:04
without knowledge
07:05
This should be
07:07
enough proof
07:08
for those
07:08
who want to comment
07:09
on every issue
07:10
discussed
07:12
even though
07:12
they do not know
07:13
the correct rulings
07:15
or responses
07:17
to them
07:17
These people
07:19
want to do
07:20
Ijtihad
07:20
on these issues
07:22
yet they have
07:23
no right
07:23
to do so
07:24
When a person
07:26
falls into a situation
07:28
where a discussion
07:30
leads into something
07:31
he does not
07:32
have knowledge on
07:33
This person
07:35
faces two choices
07:36
If people
07:38
in this situation
07:39
truly are righteous
07:40
they will simply
07:42
say I don't know
07:43
and leave it like that
07:45
But for those
07:46
who are arrogant
07:47
or ignorant
07:48
they will try
07:49
their best
07:49
to answer the question
07:50
even though
07:52
they may have
07:53
no idea
07:53
what the Islamic
07:54
stance
07:55
or ruling
07:55
may be
07:56
The above
07:58
ayah
07:58
puts it
07:59
simple
08:00
and is something
08:01
we should reflect
08:02
on every day
08:03
of our lives
08:04
We should take
08:05
from the example
08:06
of those
08:06
pious people
08:07
who came
08:08
before us
08:09
People such as
08:10
Imam Ahmad
08:11
ibn Hanbal
08:11
and Imam Shafi'i
08:13
who when faced
08:15
with a question
08:16
they did not know
08:17
the answer to
08:18
simply said
08:19
I do not know
08:20
and left it like that
08:22
This simple phrase
08:23
shows the sincerity
08:25
and wisdom
08:26
in such men
08:27
It shows that
08:28
they are seeking
08:29
knowledge
08:29
and not spreading
08:31
it for self-recognition
08:32
but rather
08:33
to be closer
08:34
to Allah
08:35
the Lord
08:37
of all the worlds
08:37
One of the principles
08:39
we learn
08:40
from Islam
08:41
is that being silent
08:42
is better
08:43
than speaking
08:44
The Prophet
08:45
said
08:47
whoever is silent
08:48
will be successful
08:50
Also we learn
08:51
that the tongue
08:52
is a source
08:53
of evil
08:54
and that a person
08:55
who guards his tongue
08:56
and private parts
08:58
will enter Jannah
08:59
Again we see
09:01
that very people
09:02
who do this
09:03
many of which
09:04
do not know
09:05
the consequences
09:06
of their actions
09:08
We learn
09:09
from other hadith
09:11
that one word
09:12
can cause you
09:13
to enter
09:13
hellfire
09:14
for 70 years
09:16
or seasons
09:17
Such a big punishment
09:18
yet we never
09:20
hold our tongues
09:21
and we continue
09:22
to talk nonsense
09:24
without thinking
09:25
twice about it
09:26
We also learn
09:28
from the Prophet
09:28
that we should
09:31
say good
09:31
or be quiet
09:32
Now you may say
09:34
I do say good
09:35
So what is the problem?
09:37
If we study
09:38
the Quran
09:39
we learn
09:40
that the best
09:41
things to talk
09:42
about
09:43
and the most
09:44
recommended are
09:45
speaking for the
09:47
sake of helping
09:48
in charity
09:48
speaking to order
09:50
good
09:50
and speaking
09:52
to unite people
09:52
in good
09:53
These are the
09:55
three topics
09:56
we should be
09:57
concentrating on
09:58
when we speak
09:58
Are we trying
09:59
to help our
10:00
Muslim brothers
10:00
and sisters
10:01
when we speak?
10:02
Are we trying
10:03
to order good
10:04
upon ourselves
10:05
and others
10:06
when we speak?
10:07
Are we trying
10:08
to unite people
10:09
in good?
10:10
Bringing the
10:11
Muslims together
10:12
when we speak?
10:12
If you can't
10:14
answer yes
10:14
to at least
10:15
one of these
10:16
then there is
10:17
a serious problem
10:18
that needs
10:18
correcting
10:19
Truly it is
10:21
a sickness
10:21
in the heart
10:22
for one to
10:23
speak about
10:23
evil
10:24
or issues
10:25
he has no
10:26
knowledge in
10:27
This is something
10:28
outside of Islam
10:29
So why do we
10:31
do it?
10:31
We claim to be
10:32
striving for the
10:33
sake of Allah
10:34
yet we do not
10:36
even adopt
10:37
the proper
10:37
mannerisms
10:38
of a believer
10:39
This is a test
10:41
from Allah
10:41
subhanahu wa ta'ala
10:42
Something which
10:44
is easy upon
10:44
one who looks
10:46
at his own
10:46
mistakes and
10:48
tries his best
10:49
to correct them
10:50
There are many
10:51
hadith and
10:52
ayat from
10:53
the Quran
10:54
that speak
10:55
on this issue
10:56
but there is
10:57
not much need
10:58
to get into
10:59
every single
11:00
one of them
11:00
The main point
11:02
is we should
11:03
not speak
11:04
unless needed
11:05
and what we
11:06
speak of should
11:07
be something
11:07
productive
11:08
Every day
11:09
we should
11:10
analyze ourselves
11:11
and truly
11:12
think about
11:13
what we did
11:14
in our day
11:15
and what we
11:17
may have said
11:18
This is the only
11:19
method of
11:20
correct
11:21
to find our
11:22
own mistakes
11:23
and work on
11:24
improving
11:25
what we are
11:26
weak in
11:26
Do we wish
11:28
to be amongst
11:28
those people
11:29
in hellfire
11:31
because of what
11:32
we may have
11:32
said?
11:33
This is the
11:34
reality
11:34
and only we
11:35
can safeguard
11:37
our tongues
11:37
and keep
11:39
ourselves
11:39
thriving
11:40
to be on
11:41
the righteous
11:41
path
11:42
and keep
11:44
to be
11:45
as
11:46
as
11:46
as
11:47
as
11:49
as
11:49
