At the age of seventeen, young Moshe Kahn was asked to be head counselor of Tzelem Camp where he led the boys in daily activities and ruach. This was his first foray as a communal leader and he already exhibited skills that made people trust ability and guidance. Moshe's first Master’s Degree in Engineering came from Brooklyn College. While working as an engineer, Mr. Kahn helped develop the very first answering machine. Subsequently, he pursued a Master’s Degree in psychology, and began working with his father, Rabbi Mordechai Kahn a”h. Together they opened the first camp for people with special needs, HASC - Hebrew Academy for Special Children, in 1972.
In its early beginnings, HASC was worth about half a million dollars. Under Mr. Kahn’s leadership it grew into a 45 million dollar enterprise at its height. Moshe served as the HASC camp director and CEO of HASC schools. In the early years, Moshe flew all over the world to meet and assess prospective campers just so he could assess whether or the environment of HASC would be suitable for them.

While serving as the damp director of HASC, Moshe Kahn developed close relationships with the campers and staff. The counselors would seek him out for guidance and a listening ear and Mr. Kahn devotedly attended their weddings and family Simchas around the world.
Moshe Kahn demonstrated by personal example how to treat campers with special needs. He recognized their neshama, their soul, even in a child who could not respond or the adult who could not control his body movements and bodily functions. Mr. Kahn spoke with them tenderly, shook their hands and even pulled their teeth when a “dentist” was needed. Over the years working at Camp HASC became not just a job but a privilege that veterans added to their shidduch and job resumes with pride.
