Residents of Carterton, New Zealand, are in shock after a fatal balloon crash killed 11 people on Saturday.
Local television network TVNZ reported that families were watching as the balloon clipped power lines and burst into flames.
Eyewitness Jacqui O'Connor said they were making calls, crying and comforting each other as they watched in horror.
Some of them also called out to O'Connor for help.
[Jacqui O'Connor, Eyewitness]:
"They were saying 'Come now – Mum and Dad have been in a balloon accident, it's burst into flames and they are dead.'"
Just over 7,000 people live in the town of Carterton. Many residents are in disbelief at what has happened.
"It's going to hit the community hard as well, as all the families."
The pilot flying the balloon, Lance Hopping, had been flying balloons for more than 16 years, and had spent more than 10,000 hours in the air.
