Dan Croft's Fatal Crash @ Long Beach 1988

Daniel "Dan" Dow Croft died in the intensive care ward of St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California, on Tuesday, 26 April 1988, ten days after receiving serious head and internal injuries in a single-car crash at the rolling start of the Trans-Am race, on Saturday, 16 April 1988, the day before the CART Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

His Chevrolet Camaro went out of control on the main straightaway and ricocheted between the concrete walls that line the circuit. He received severe head injuries and was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, where he had been in critical condition and unconscious until his death.

Dan Croft lived in nearby Seal Beach, California, at the time of his death. Burial was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, Orange County, California. He was making his sixth Trans-Am start, participating at Long Beach for the first time. His death was the first fatality in 14 years of professional racing at the downtown Long Beach Grand Prix circuit.
