Lee Bible & Charles Traub's Fatal Crash @ Ormond Beach 1929 (Aftermath)

Lee Bible, a mechanic from Daytona Beach, and Charles Traub, a photographer from Miami, lost their lives on 13 March 1929 in the sands of Ormand Beach/Daytona Beach, during the challenge that the newspapers of the time called the "greatest speed battle of all-time".

Bible's first record attempt began in the mid-afternoon on Wednesday, 13 March 1929. His first run was clocked at less than 186 mi/h, quite far from the record. In the return run he set 202 mi/h, but just past the time trap the car suddenly swerved, probably because Bible released the gas pedal too quickly. The machine crashed into the dunes about one hundred feet past the timing trap and rolled, coming to a rest two-hundred feet farther. Bible's body was thrown from the car. The Triplex had also run into cameraman Charles Traub, who had panicked and while attempting to avoid the out-of-control car ran directly into its path. Had he stayed at his camera's set-up location, he would not have been harmed. Both men were killed instantly. The Triplex was completely destroyed in the crash.
