Activists said ten children were killed after forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad dropped barrel bombs on a school on Wednesday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 19, including ten children, but the Aleppo Media Centre said the air raid led to 25 deaths instead.

Ain Jalout school was located in Aleppo, the largest city in Syria which the pro-government forces and rebels wrestle to control. It was hosting an art exhibition, displaying children's paintings and drawings, which depicted their sufferings in the war-torn country.

The Syrian government is accused of dropping barrel bombs. Metal drums packed with explosives, shards of metals and oil.

UNICEF, the United Nations' children agency, condemned the attack in an official statement and said it was "outraged by the latest wave of indiscriminate attacks perpetrated against schools and other civilian targets across Syria".

Thousands of children have been killed since the country was thrown into civil war in 2011.
