Despite a night of grey skies and heavy rain...Hollywood star power shined brightly on the red carpet for the opening of the 66th Cannes film festival.

The A-list jury headed up by Steven Spielberg and including Nicole Kidman and 'Life of Pi' director Ang Lee arrived on the red carpet to sign autographs for fans...some of whom have been camped out for three days.

This year's festival opened with 'The Great Gatsby' -- Baz Luhrmann's heady jaunt through the Jazz Age starring Leonardo DiCaprio, who was met with a wild reception as he greeted fans.

The screening of the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel was followed by a star-studded reception.

Around 20 films compete for the top prize -- the Palme d'Or -- whilst elsewhere the festival provides a showcase for up-and-coming movie talent and is a huge industry market.
