Fighting Mom and Dad Can Stunt Baby's Growth

A fighting mom and dad can stunt a baby's growth.

If you’re feeling stressed out and moody it could be your parents’ fault.

Studies show that adults who argue in front of their babies may be setting the kids up for a life filled with anxiety, poor emotional coping skills, and mood disorders.

The researchers found that babies from conflict-filled environments have adverse reactions later in life when confronted with an angry tone of voice.

Alice Graham from the University of Oregon and her team used an imaging tool that measured brain activity on twenty infants.

While sleeping in the scanner the babies were spoken to in a variety of tones.

Graham said, “Even during sleep, infants showed distinct patterns of brain activity depending on the emotional tone of voice we presented.”

The team found that the infants from angry environments had a more pronounced reaction to adverse tones in the areas of the brain that control stress and emotional response.

Stress occurring early in life affects the neural systems that regulate emotions in later years.
