Pistorius in court as Steenkamp's funeral takes place

Reeva Steenkamp's coffin arrives at a Port Elizabeth crematorium on Tuesday ahead of her private funeral.

The 29-year-old model was shot dead at the home of her boyfriend and Olympic and Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius last Thursday.

At the same time, the South African double amputee nicknamed "Blade Runner" arrives at a Pretoria court to apply for bail after being charged with Steenkamp's murder.

Outside the courthouse a small group from the African National Congress Women's League also gathers.

One representative says Pistorius shouldn't be granted bail.

"Our concern is that class and money seems to be dictating how things should go and we believe that he is just a murderer. That's what he is."

The 26-year-old sprinter was widely held up as a hero in his native South Africa, competing with prosthetic legs against able-bodied athletes at the highest level.

Initial media reports suggested Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder.

But police have said Steenkamp was killed by more than one gunshot and that neighbours had heard earlier disturbances.

Pistorius is the only suspect in the model's death.
