Norwalk Community College sophomore Fenix D'Haity says, being raised by women, he feels that women are "God's gift to men."

That sort of thinking was expressed all over the world Thursday, including at Norwalk Community College, for the One Billion Rising movement.

The movement invites people around the world to speak out against violence against women this Valentine's Day.

"It's about the genocides and rapes and injustices to women all over the world," says Jennifer Weekes-Osinowo, a staff member part of the NCC Student Activity Dept.

"This is a time for people to speak out and express themselves and bring awareness around," says sophomore Christine Fils-Aime, who sang during the event.

The movement says one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime.

'"I have seen or witnessed rapes and I think a lot of times people get away with it," says Weekes-Osinowo.

D'Haity, who recited an original poem Thursday, says that should never happen.

"Whatever we can do to progress toward changing that, we should do it."

"It's time for countries start doing things about it to bring the perpetrators to justice," Weekes-Osinowo says.
