River Studies Tell the Sustainability Story

Since 1965, Eastman has voluntarily sponsored periodic environmental studies of the rivers upstream and downstream of our major U. S. manufacturing sites. A team of scientists from the Philadelphia-based Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University has completed its seventh evaluation of the South Fork Holston River near our Kingsport, Tennessee facility.

“We have a responsibility to protect the river – a responsibility that we take seriously- and I think we’re doing a good job,” said Keith Harris, environmental affairs associate at the site. “The Academy’s findings verify that Eastman’s protection efforts are working.”

The results of our insight? The river’s ecosystem is more diverse and vibrant than ever.

The Academy’s 2010 study – the seventh and most recent – found 30 types of fish and 109 species of aquatic life in the river at Riverfront Park—a vast improvement over the 1965 findings of 3 types of fish and 15 species of aquatic life.
